These houses typically began as small workers cottages on narrow lots without basements, many dating to the mid-late 1800s, and as families grew the homes expanded one section at a time over several decades.
Most of these types of homes are in the East Side neighborhoods, especially close to the Central Terminal.
Newton Street, for example, looks very nondescript in street view, but an aerial view shows nearly every home with 2,3, or more additions onto the back. The oldest home on this street dates to 1840.
