The same discussion was pretty rampant during the building of the Frost Tower in Austin (finished 2005). It's a fantastic building, so much so that Marina 101 in Dubai is pretty much an exact ripoff, only taller. Anyway, Frost is just over 500 feet tall. When it was built it was 100 feet taller than the current tallest in Austin. People thought it should go even taller but others said it would stick out too much in the skyline. Now look at it with the Austonian nearby at 684 feet. The moral here is that all other things being equal, there's nothing wrong with going taller.
