If it is any consolation, the "Downtown" SLC area has much more happening than "Downtown" Phoenix (Metro area 4 million), and "Downtown" Los Angeles (12+ million). The same can't be said for the entire central area, but SLC has a good centralization of stuff to do, especially when it comes to nightlife and shopping.
