2017 looks like a tough one to beat in terms of the sheer number of (currently known) supertalls in construction, while also leaving out total unknowns (like towers lacking a completion date, current site activity and/or financing) such as 15 Penn, 42 Trinity, that Brooklyn supertall and 1710 Broadway which still have a good chance of starting before December 31st, 2021.
123 W 57th's construction start year can be reasonably guessed based on how the Nordstrom tower started construction before One57 was fully wrapped up. It might happen sooner if NIMBYs manage to do something that would pressure Barnett to expedite construction, like one those proposed moratoriums on buildings taller than 600 feet actually coming into force (which does seem thankfully unlikely however).
