Jefferson Health plans to expand its Center City footprint with the addition of a multimillion-dollar ambulatory care center about a block from its main hospital.

CEO Dr. Stephen Klasko provided limited details about the building project during a recent Philadelphia Business Journal "Power Interview" virtual event. He said the health system expects to provide more information about its plans in September.

Jefferson's outpatient facility, Klasko said, will be "the most innovative ambulatory center" and "not like anything that exists today." He said their goal is to provide a center where everything that isn't acute intensive care can be provided.

The outpatient care center will be built at 11th and Chestnut streets, according to industry sources, where a building formerly occupied by an assortment of retail stores is nearly demolished. East Market developer National Real Estate Development filed zoning permits with the city in October for two towers on the site: a 23-story medical office building with retail on the bottom and a 24-story tower with 396 apartments and retail.

"It's just that anything elective ought to be done in a very consumer-oriented focus," he said. "So we're going to partner with not just the best health systems in the country and the best venture capitalists in the country, but we're going to partner with hospitality and others that are looking at a very different way of providing care."

The new outpatient care center is not the only building project Jefferson has planned for Center City.

In December, Jefferson announced it had received</a> a $70 million gift from Sidney and Caroline Kimmel, which it will use for a 12-story biomedical research building at 9th and Locust streets. The research building is expected to cost between $300 million and $350 million to erect on land now used for a Jefferson parking garage. The building will be connected to the Bluemle Life Sciences Building by a bridge to promote exchanges with researchers in the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.
