PUC approves Xcel energy plan
BY Perter Roper - The Pueblo Chieftain
Quote:
Xcel Energy's plan to replace coal-fired units at its Comanche Station with a $2.5 billion investment in renewable energy was approved Monday by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
This most recent plan will mean that Xcel will produce over half of its electricity with renewable energy by 2026 if all goes well.

I recall Xcel building Comanche 3 in Pueblo; it was finished around 2010 and cost about $1.3 billion. It came with all the new 'bells and whistles' cleantech for modern coal power plants. With this plan the older pollution-belching coal burners will be decommissioned. The new plan:
Quote:
It calls for building 1,100 megawatts of wind power, 700 megawatts of solar power and 275 megawatts of battery storage.

Dave Cockrell, chairman of the Sierra Club's Conservation Committee, said Xcel's decision would make Pueblo a "clean energy hub."
After President Obama lit a fire under the renewable energy industry via the ARRA the costs of both solar and wind power were cut in half by the time he left office. Wind power costs have continued to decline. When politicos consider legacies how many even realize that renewable energy and LED light bulbs were easily Obama's most game changing accomplishment. Second is transit and third was the ACA - IMO.
