Elevated tracks went all the way down to the tip of Manhattan. That began to change with public control of the subways, as some lines became redundant. I believe most Manhattan els were torn down by the late 50's, but I don't remember exactly.

Here's a 1939 map of the IRT system (today's numbered trains) with the elevated lines in blue...
