Here's some average speeds I found on the web:
France TGV -- 158 mph
Japan Shinkansen -- 164
Germany -- 125
Italy -- 103
British - London to York -- 112
By contrast, the fastest part of the Acela Express route (Philadelphia-Washington) averages 85.3 MPH, and the entire Boston-Washington route averages 70.3 MPH.
