Transportation agency backs off BART station changes — for now

In the face of mounting public opposition, the Valley Transportation Authority on Monday said it was moving away from a funding strategy that could have seen two planned BART stations cut from the line's next phase.

Officials at a community meeting in East San Jose said that they would press forward with an environmental study that looks at all four stations as originally envisioned for the 10-mile stretch, which will run from San Jose's Berryessa neighborhood to Santa Clara. That's a shift from last month, when officials said they would also study a cheaper, two-station plan that they hoped would be more competitive in the all-important race for federal funding. That scheme could have seen the Santa Clara and Alum Rock stations axed.
