The recently concluded Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) is expected to bring in investments worth around ₹8,347 crore to the Mangaluru region. The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), the only major port in Karnataka, exchanged seven memorandums of understanding with various stakeholders.

A majority of the investment proposals are focused on port-led industrialisation, with Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) at the top of the heap.

MRPL has proposed ₹5,000 crore investment in port infrastructure for business development and ₹1,500 crore in its own desalination plant (augmentation of capacity).

NMPA also exchanged MoUs with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (₹800 crore) and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (₹500 crore) towards port-led industrialisation.

Sealord Containers Ltd’s MoU focuses on setting up an integrated LPG and bulk liquid POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) storage facility in Mangaluru. This is expected to attract investments worth ₹500 crore.

NMPA’s MoU with PHPC Associates for installation of tank farms and/or storage infrastructure at New Mangalore Port is expected to attract around ₹47 crore investment.

But I think in Mangaluru cooking oil or palm waste is available easily due to presence of many oil processing industries. By the way, what are those cooking oil refineries releasing into Gurupur river? Are they useful for SAF production?

IT stakeholders seek govt push to attract Saudi firms

Mangaluru: The IT stakeholders in Mangaluru have urged the state government, especially Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), to give a push, support, and invite 25 companies that have signed a letter of intent (LoI) to the coastal city for further development. In mid-Sept, KDEM’s roadshow was held in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia, led by industries from the Mangaluru cluster.

The event, which saw a positive response, resulted in the signing of 25 LoIs by KSA companies. However, it has not been materialised into reality.

Mangaluru: The quality of the talent pool, connectivity, quality of life, lower attrition rate and operational costs, compared to metro cities, attract information technology (IT) companies to set up their satellite offices in Mangaluru.

The recent one to set up an office here is Tech Mahindra, which has been operational for the past six months in the city.

A leading audit, consulting, and tax firm from the United Kingdom is also looking for a new workspace in Mangaluru. Others are in the pipeline and have done an initial survey of the place.

Murali Manohar, former MD of Infor India, a multinational company headquartered in New York, told TOI that as a Beyond Bengaluru initiative, a lot of IT company heads who are natives of Mangaluru and working in big companies are pushing IT giants to set up their satellite office here.

He said earlier, they had planned to set up this plant in Pavagada in Tumakuru district, but Mangaluru appears to be an ideal place because of the sea and port. Stating that Gujarat and Rajasthan have already begun green hydropower generation, he said Karnataka will not be left behind. To begin with, he said the 300 kilo Watt plant will be set up in Mangaluru and added many investors have also shown interest in investing in this field in the state during the recent World Economic Forum in Davos.

If they want to produce Green Hydrogen from sea water then naturally feasibility and all research studies have to be done with sea water.

“In Mangaluru, we have around 4 acres of land. We want to build an IT (information technology) park of around 4 lakh sq ft in that location,” he said, adding, the proposed project will also have a skill development and a centre for excellence.

To a query on the time frame for this project, he said the intention is to take up the ground-breaking process within six months, if KEONICS gets all the technicalities related to the project cleared in six months.

Indicating that the project will be taken up under PPP (public-private partnership) model, Bachegowda said: “We want to monetise the assets under us. We want to make sure that this low hanging fruit is encashed as early as possible.”

To stimulate growth in Mangaluru, the government has been proactive in implementing sector-specific policies, including the niche AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics) policy, alongside startup-supportive policies. Initiatives such as ELEVATE have been designed to foster innovation and support start-ups, she said.

Caur said the Government is planning to set up a Centre of Excellence for Marine Biotechnology sector in Mangaluru.

Sanjeev Gupta, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KDEM, said there are 25-30 companies in the pipeline poised to establish their operations in Mangaluru, indicating a significant influx of business and technological expertise to the city.
