I'm glad quickstop identified the mystery building in Santa Monica, because it means that I can end my search of CC Pierce Collection photos at USC - I was hoping to find a larger version. Along the way, I found this image which I think is new to NLA. We've seen later buildings belonging to the Title Guarantee and Trust Company Building, but not this one at 201 New High Street on the corner of Franklin Street. The image is dated 1900.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original USC Digital Library Here's the Title Guarantee and Trust Company Building on the 1910 Baist map - I've arrowed the rough direction that the camera was looking. Due to its proximity to the Courthouse and Hall of Records, I'm sure it's appeared in the background of other pictures on NLA. Did you notice the Court Street steps (pre-dating Court Flight) on the far left of the picture above? http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original www.historicmapworks.com |

This is another Julius Shulman job with the address in the title, although a note in the description gives the photography credit to Carlos von Frankenberg. It's "Job 6018: 1350 Belfast Drive House (West Hollywood, Calif.), 1981".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Getty Research Institute It looks like balconies have replaced the old covered areas at the back of the house. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original Bing Maps Here's the house from the front. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original GSV I don't know how many people do this, but the columns from the house are duplicated on the mailbox :). http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...fastDrive4.jpg GSV |

Take a look at this youtube clip below from the opening of the 1969 Academy awards held on Monday, April 14, 1969, the first time they were held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. First there's an outside long shot of the Pavilion with two characters from the film Oliver! Then there's a shot of Gregory Peck walking along the outside of the entrance, then he walks through the empty lobby area. The circular design areas are not at all as pronounced as you see on the above postcards and that carpeting looks as green as the mezzanine carpet mentioned. Then he walks down the staircase seen in the background of the bottom card. Not the most informative, but here's a couple of shots of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion portrayed as the lobby of the Rome Hilton in the "Souvenir" episode of Mad Men. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FW86_jO7k_...e%2B8%2BP4.jpg The staircase: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2583/...cd231899bc.jpg Outside, a made up cafe area by the fountain. Thank you quickstop for IDing the building at 7th and Wilshire in Santa Monica, and thank you e_r for the extra pics!

In the photo below, from Los Angeles of Today Architecturally (Morgan and Walls, 1896), 201 New High St. is identified as the Abstract Building. It also has two fewer stories than it does in your photo. http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...a.jpg~original LAPL - Flyingwedge photo |

This house belongs to exercise guru Richard Simmons, who, like many of us, was once young.. Born: Milton Teagle Simmons July 12, 1948 (age 68) [20016] New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S. Its hard to pick a photo of this man but the one at the left seems to be Richard in his prime. Right photo: June 9, 2013, Because he currently lives in seclusion, there are few if any recent photos of him. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pskvyxqbnp.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps4jjeerwa.jpg usmagazine - photos |

Loretta looks great-- I think she'd have approved of this picture. As for 'Jane'-- she might have come after you with an axe for misidentifying her... |

While looking into the history of 527 South Lucerne Boulevard, I came acrossd some good noir in the guise of a platinum blonde. Murder doesn't seem to have been involved, but the family of J. Parker Read was an interesting one. I'm wondering if any NLAer's have any insight into him--he was an associate of Thomas Ince (he produced the 1920 film Sex starring vamp Louise Glaum); he divorced his wife and in 1921 married a Ruth Piper, recently divorced herself, with two children. It's not easy to parse, but it seems her daughter (born Alyce Piper) may have been rechristened after her mother and promoted by her publicist stepfather in hopes of a movie career. Ruth Piper II appears to have been more interested in men and nightclubs--no long studio hours for her, not that anyone was hiring her-- Anyway, she had many marriages-- Hollingsworth, Foran, Chatfield, perhaps Pardo, Humphreys, at least-- Parker and Ruth Read appear to have divorced by the end of the 30s, each remarrying. Like his associate Ince, he seems to have fallen on hard times. He was in NYC doing film publicity; soon after, back in SoCal, working for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co, apparently at the Central Avenue building. He died in 1942. Lots of tangles here--perhaps all of the above is mangled. The origins and fate Ruth Piper Hollingsworth Foran etc etc in particular intrigue me. Anyone know anything? |

---------------- Here's another picture I found while looking through the CC Pierce Collection yesterday. The title is "Steam-shovel removing old sidewalk on Temple Street". It's undated. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...rPlumbing1.jpg USC Digital Library I couldn't find the name "Miller Plumbing Co" in the CDs, but I did find a plumbing company run by Louis Miller at various addresses on Temple Street. After visiting the area with the Googlemobile, I discounted 1122 and 1151 Temple, and decided that 1201 Temple was the most likely address. It was home to the company in the '30s and into the '40s. The online building records don't seem to have a new construction permit for 1201 Temple until 1976, and that's not available to view. They do, however, have a few alteration permits from 1931 and 1932 in Louis Miller's name. There's also no demo permit. This is the building currently at 1201 Temple Street. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...rPlumbing2.jpg GSV |
:previous:It's nice to see the building has retained it's character despite the filled-in windows and loss of some ornament along the roof line.
but that 'after' of the F.M Teter Bldg. is very disheartening. __ |
re: the picture of the steam shovel on Temple Street. I think it is more likely that the picture was taken at Temple and Edgeware, rather than at Boylston. This is because there are streetcar tracks curving around on the side street and there were tracks on Edgeware that went up the hill to the Angelino Heights community, but no tracks on Boylston.

I found this intriguing 'mystery' photograph the other night on eBay.
"Los Angeles Non-Denominational First Radio Church Historic Press Photo" http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/aENt8r.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/LA6-1920s-Lo...oAAOSwqBJXVKQk The writing on the back lists..."L.A., Historcial, Churches, Misc., First Radio Church" (in that order), and written on a post-it attached to the back...."KHJ = 1922, Sister Aimee 1924" ________________________ Do any of you noirishers recognize this building, or the location of the photograph? I'm a bit stumped. __ on the reverse http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/bfFx7b.jpghttp://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/Vkl6am.jpg Here's one last look, enlarged a bit. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/hqoVzU.jpg I just notice there's a sign with writing:previous: over the front porch. Okay, lets try looking at it extra-LARGE http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/EwYaU0.jpg Can anyone decipher it? _ |
