To my great surprise, the trees are still there! https://i.postimg.cc/dtk8GXJm/Jacaranda3.jpg gsv The W.C. Stuarts have a nice handful of mentions in the Los Angeles Times . . . but nothing of interest, almost always of the Social Happenings sort. I've found a time frame for Boureston's, but that's about all I can find. The following is from jassdancer.blogspot.com: Boureston's is legendary among the greatest dancers to ever step foot on a floor in Los Angeles. Between the years 1943 and 1945, the weekly dance was the hottest location for the best to have their showdowns. It must've been mentioned in the newspapers. I've just noticed that their very similar matchbook has the phone number Axminister 9090. |

From the location of the trees, the Stuarts probably lived on the northwest corner. (replaced by apt. building) The Bissell House, on the southwest corner, was built in 1887. (that pink Bissell House Bed & Breakfast thingy is pointing to the wrong house) I corrected it with my skillfully drawn red arrow. ;) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/ymcKTk.png GSV It's impossible to get a view of it from the google-mobile...so here's a pic of the pool and the back of the house via Tripadvisor https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/S8UxeG.jpg tripadvisor _ |

I'm thinking, though, that Ventura Blvd. through that section probably used to be the old Hwy. 101, which crosses the railroad tracks. Here's a Google Streetview from the Camarillo Metrolink station parking lot: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.2154...2!8i6656?hl=en |

Obesity is really more common now than it was back then. Even when I was a kid, it seemed there weren't too many fat people. And when you saw one, they really stood out. When I was in elementary school, which was in the mid 70s-early 80s, there was only 1 fat kid in the class, and again, he stood out. And he wasn't even really fat, just "chubby." Today, fat kids seem to be common, and nobody seems fazed by it. I'm thinking because there's more fast food restaurants out there than ever, and people just don't cook at home... or when they do, they use processed food like instant potatoes or whatever. Not only is this contributing to obesity but also higher rates of diseases like cancer and high blood pressure. At a previous job I had, quite a number of people would bring those instant microwavable lunches to work and eat that for lunch. I'm sure those are really high in sodium and preservatives. I couldn't imagine doing that all the time. |
Don't forget that portion sizes today are larger than they were 50 years ago.

It's been awhile since I posted the parade pic. I was beginning to think we weren't going to figure this one out. I believe your mountain ridges match up perfectly. I wonder if the open area behind the many carriages could possibly be Brookside Park. (OK. I looked at the old sepia again. I don't think it's anywhere near Brookside Park) Brookside is near the interchange you mentioned (just a bit north and to the left). The mountains would appear the same there as well. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/mNxFyZ.jpg google earth If we could only find the distinctive building behind the flagpole (in the old cabinet card). -slightly LARGER image HERE Come on minions! :whip: We can do this! __ |
The Oct. 25, 1937 murder of L.A. wiseguy Les Bruneman was briefly covered in a couple of posts way back on pg. 425, but I don't believe we have seen the exterior of the murder location...a photo from that same year:

Temple St. https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...pssell9zco.jpg https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...psovdzxdod.jpg Bruneman was having a late dinner with his nurse (he was still recovering from gunshot wounds received in a hit that July outside of the Surf Club, a joint he owned in Redondo Beach)....a waiter in the cafe, who ran out to get the license plate of the getaway car, was also killed....J.H. Graham tells us the Bruneman story here: https://jhgraham.com/2017/03/23/geor...man-1897-1937/ The Roost Cafe was the scene of another killing, this one a botched robbery on 6/26/53, featured in James Ellroy's photo-essay book "L.A.P.D. '53" and recently covered here in the thread. |

Looking north on Highland (late '40s). Notice Muntz TV, far right. No listing available. Can anyone place the exact address? http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/o...8.jpg~originalW&P ===== This is roughly 50-100 feet north of Santa Monica Blvd. My grandmother worked for a time at that butcher place immediately north (reads Beverly Hills on side of building) of Muntz. |

I've recently gone through an aortic valve replacement dictated by nothing but a birth defect. The corrective operation left me functionally healthy but in a position where I must eat obsessively healthily in order to get back on track, and the fact is that to do that I am forced to eat home cooking constantly in order to avoid excess salt and sugar. And let me emphasize that even now I have no vascular damage. I have never had a cholesterol issue, and I have NO plaque blockage. Heart issues can frag you violently at any point, despite your best efforts. They can lead to both stroke and lung issues well before the true source is determined. Don't ask me how I know. The bottom line is that if you want to live and love as long as you can, eat to live--as opposed to living to eat. And I want all of you to live as long as you can. ESPECIALLY you all. I depend upon you daily. The loving is at your discretion. |

https://i.postimg.cc/44z4kmgz/20190214-ER-Mystery01.jpgGoogle Maps The little building(poolhouse) still seems to be there(at least the size and shape is the same) and is the Pasadena Casting Club. ETA: Being a good minion, I went back to look at what the Pasadena Casting Club was. It's Casting related to fishing, no casting couch. The building in ER's photo is the same one that's currently there, looking at the street view. The "swimming pool" is what the club used for casting, it seems to be bigger now than in ER's photo. |
:previos: Wow! Good sleuthing Bill! I didn't realize Pasadena had a casting club.

The Crosby Building (Bing) has recently been submitted for historic preservation because a developer wants to build another hotel there.
I believe the Crosby Building at 9034 Sunset Blvd., near Doheny, has been mentioned on NLA previously: 1938 image from Playground to the Stars: http://www.playgroundtothestars.com/...38-676x507.jpg This is what the developer wants to build, complete with a helipad on the roof: It's a twister! https://www.wehoville.com/wp-content...et-508x600.png May I ask, have architects lost their minds lately? Are they inspired by Frank Gehry? This looks like a melted version of the Capitol Records building. https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/Rnzt...11x17_47.0.jpg If you look at the above rendering it looks like they either surrounded and remodeled the Crosby building or just paid an homage to it. Because of the Crosby Building being submitted for historic preservation, the developer has submitted a design proposal, below, to keep the building, but move it over to the east. https://www.wehoville.com/wp-content...0.32.07-AM.png |

Ok, my brain is having some issues, so am throwing myself on the mercy of the most excellent researchers there are. I'm doing some work on early Hill Street and a couple pictures are confounding me. Any input would be appreciated.
These two Widney houses. Here's this image of Joseph Widney's pad at 321 S Hill. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7879/...f3662b2d_o.jpgusc Problem is, here's the 1888 Sanborn. 321, bottom, doesn't look much like it, other than the bay window on the south side. I'm thinking the image was shot earlier in the 80s (JP seems to have moved to 321 in '83, see below) and then made an addition to it (stretching out the north side of the facade to the east) between then and '88. Thoughts? And what do we think is up there on the hillside? https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7823/...b5cd83cf_o.png Now also at USC is this image of "Judge Widney"'s residence. See how much it looks like 321's neighbor, on the Sanborn. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7807/...301aec14_o.jpgusc Sure looks like 317 (or whatever that address is between 321 and 309) to me, but there's no listing for a Widney there, but there is a listing for a Widney at 309 (they say Robert lives there but in the same '83 listing say he lives on Hill "between Fourth and Fifth"), but 309 doesn't look like this on the Sanborn. Opinions? A roundup of Widneys moving about in the 80s: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7867/...775ffb0e_o.png Thanks in advance! |
