that railway picture..i have nothing to say! vietnam railway is outdated like 100 years behind, but at least it is fully connected from north to south.....
not really stand still, but management system, service got alots improvements after the war...many new rail-bridge were built to provide better safety, smoother operation..

nothing change much on speed,rail-gauge,train...everything is pretty old..like i said!
people live near railway have strong-stone heart and awesome bravery..don't worry! =))

KoolKool Dec 2, 2014 4:08 PM

let hope Hanoi can reduce traffic jam,and people have better chance to enjoy good quality public tranportations in the future....crossing the street won't be a nighmare anymore...
walking is better&healthier than driving your motorbike :D

Hanoi (just like HCMC) is building light rail,BRT,subway...which is a very good news!

Totally have to visit this country. The food... Glorious food:)

Dr Awesomesauce Dec 7, 2014 2:23 AM

BRT can only work in VN if these buses run in their own dedicated lanes - I would hope that's the plan; otherwise, forget about it.

That elevated line in HN looks great and appears to be much further along than the metro project in Saigon. Corruption and general incompetence has delayed the HCMC metro line many years. It's been 'under construction' for years and years without evidence of any progress until quite recently. Most recent reports have completion at some point in 2018. We'll see...

In terms of traffic in HCMC, it's now reaching the point where getting from point A to point B is a nearly impossible task. I live approximately 1 km from where I work. There are days where it takes nearly 30 min to get there. This city needs massive investment in public transport and road infrastructure asap.

ah! you are right! especially in rush hours, traffic is a real big pain!:slob:
subway project in hanoi has same situation too....much slower, until now there is still no progress, only newly setup construction sites!:uhh:

that elevated line doesn't have a place on CBD area (Old Quarter),but at least it will serve well enough for some dense population areas it go through!

of course man,BRT is about specific buses run on it's own lane! let hope bus drivers are well-trained too!

For dredging purpose (nạo vét)

hanoi has many small natural lakes, but the water quality is in pretty bad condition!

For 30 years now, I've been putting off reading about the Vietnam War, and I finally dived into it a month ago, and it makes me wonder if the War had never occurred, how much more advanced of a country Vietnam would be today, without their "lost years" of fighting either the French or the U.S.!

I could only imagine! Hanoi would be comparable to Bangkok by now?

Thanks ever so much for uploading all those photo's of Hanoi, and a perfect recap to this depressing book I just finished.

I can't wait to see more photo's of Hanoi, and other parts of Vietnam, in the future!

It's most unlikely I'll ever get over there for a visit, as my body has been destroyed with living in the Desert for 22 years, and here in Las Vegas, you're looking at 4 inches of rain a year, humidity levels as low as 3% in June, and no insects, mosquito's, gnats or even flies. Today, when I'm in any area of high heat/humidity I go crashing to the sidewalk! And I go into a total panic today if I encounter a mosquito!

^Yeah, you might be in trouble here. ;)

The 'what if' game is a dangerous one. Had VN not been colonised then perhaps you'd be looking at a state similar to Thailand. I'm not sure that's necessarily something to aspire to however.

And Saigon has already become pretty Bangkok-esque in terms of scale at least...

anyone can join the game!

but bangkok is a very bad model for Saigon,Hanoi...
even Thailand....not for vietnam trying to follow!:slob:

Without the US south vietnam ( saigon city ) wouldnt look like this today. You see after vietnam war ended. . South Vietnam from a country that's like in the top 10 of Asia went down to become one of the top poorest country.
Thanks to the North ( Hanoi ) communist invade us southern people and they never agree to peace negotiations with the south.

Bangkok of Thailand would be nothing compared to Saigon back in the day. Even Singapore once dreamt back in the 60 that they will surpass or at least be like south vietnam capital (saigon)
