USC dates this picture of the Farmers Market and Gilmore Stadium at 1938/39. Ground-breaking on Gilmore Field began in 1938. Maybe the dark patch on the right is the remains of the "little stadium" in Chuckaluck's picture above.

This picture gives a better view of the drive-in restaurant at the northwest corner of the stadium. The Water and Power site names it as Herberts, seen here in 1949.

Anyone remember the Los Angeles Dons, L.A.'s first professional sports franchise. They shared the Coliseum (not Gillmore Stadium sadly) with the Rams from 1946-1949:

The Cadillac's parked at the motel twigged my memory. I own a 1956 Cadillac that was purchased from Hillcrest Cadillac by the architect James Dolena. Mr. Dolena lived in Brentwood and was the "architect to the stars" > I bought the car from Mr.. Dolena's cousin who lived in Victoria at the time. I just remembered the cousin told me that the Dolenas bought matching "his and hers" Cadillacs in 1956.
Does any of James Dolenas work remain today?

The venues adapted to the exhibition. Recall that there was midget auto racing, horse shows, baseball, football and probably a host of other events. Look closely at HossC's bottom image and the (soccer?) grid on the field. Manchester United goes Hollywood? Per some of the earlier postings, there were a variety of circus tents and teepees erected near the Farmer's Market area too.

Regarding the soccer, I found that a friendly match was played at Gilmore Stadium in 1947. It was Los Angeles XI vs Hapoel Tel Aviv, and ended as a 1-1 draw. See soccerstats.us for more details. The Wikipedia article I linked to in my first post above also says cricket was played there at least once.

Are sure about the location? I have a feeling we have discussed about this very same Carolina Pines restaurant before. I also remember seeing it in some book where the address was mentioned, placing the restaurant in corner of La Brea and Sunset Blvd. In that case, those pine trees are actually on Lanewood Avenue, and yes, they're still there. Lanewood runs between La Brea and N. Orange Dr. and the entire avenue (big word for such small street) is lined up with large pine trees.

Check out this view, notice the trees and how the landscape is rising behind the restaurant exactly like in the postcard:
http://tinyurl.com/ls5uv36
Also, search for "Carolina Pines Jr. on Sunset and La Brea" brings results supporting my theory.
The very last scene in movie "Frances" (Jessica Lange, playing Francis Farmer) was filmed on Lanewood. You can see the trees and Hollywood High across
the Orange Dr.
I lived on Lanewood in mid 90's. At the time Burger King occupied the spot where Carolina Pines restaurant used to stand, if I remember correctly.

Hadn't heard of this before...

From shallowsky.com:

"On the pedestal below her, it says:

THE FOREST IS THE MOTHER OF THE RIVERS

A small plaque below that says:

BY
GLENDALE CHAPTER No 1
MCMXXVIII

On the side of the pedestal, it says:

CONSERVE THE FORESTS
PREVENT EROSION —
RENEW SOIL FERTILITY
PERPETUATE THE LUMBER SUPPLY

The title of the work, as given on an even smaller plaque on the ground in front of the statue, is "Miss American Green Cross". Apparently it was created in 1928 by sculptor Frederick Willard Proctor, for an environmental group (although I don't usually think of "the lumber supply" being a prime concern of environmental groups).

The statue was first erected at Glendale High School in 1928. But she suffered some damage and abuse over the next few years, including being hit by a car. And then at some point in the early 1930s she disappeared. No one knew what had happened to her.

She wasn't officially rediscovered until 1954, when some hikers reported seeing it near the old Brand family cemetery, now part of Brand Park. She stood there for another three and a half decades, where she continued to be vandalized, acquiring scratches as well as graffiti, and eventually losing both arms.

Eventually, in 1990, after some debate over materials and methods, the city of Glendale restored the statue and moved it down the trail to its current location near Brand Library at the foot of the Brand Park hiking trails.

I've chuckled at this statue for years, whenever I visit Glendale and hike Brand Park. I still find her trapped legs, crucifixion motif, and pile of razed stumps creepy. But I must say that her history is a lot more interesting than I had imagined."

I remember her in during her "missing years". She was located just behind what is now the catch basin, north of the Brand Library, next to the reservoir. This was just below the Brand Pyramid tomb, which as Junior High and High School students we found irresistible as a place to visit. She was even creepier in those days, surrounded by ruins and somewhat worn without her arms.

This is part of a panoramic photo. Across the center of the photo, right to left, we have the Highland Villa and its fan-shaped rooftop sign at the NW corner of 1st and Hill, then the El Moro (the part in front that looks like a house being the former Sale Mansion), the Moore-Cliff apparently being built, 133 S. Hill which came to be known as The Annex, and the last building with a staircase in front of it, the Hotel Locke.

In the upper left corner is the Crocker Mansion, the Angel's Flight Observation Tower, and either Sinai or Olivet. Below those, with its dome in front of the trees, at 209-11 S. Hill is the Hotel Lincoln. In the foreground left of center is the old Jail/Police Station (stone front & arched window) on 1st Street:

Taking a leaf from another book?

Another interesting Doctors' Office discovered while searching for :previous:. Source indicates "Los Angeles, Calif. : Mott Studios, [1937]" and author "Howard, Elwell G." No address. Can discern 4 digit street number but not much more.

http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...S1BN89QIST.jpg
http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...2V1YLKUN8H.jpg All from C.St.Lib

I'm a bit late to this, but I just stumbled across this page while searching for information about a particular architect, and I think the author "Howard, Elwell G." is probably him. If it is, his name was actually Howard George Elwell, and Mott Studios was not alone in butchering his name. Boxoffice Magazine did it, too, calling him "Howell Ewald." I unwittingly perpetuated the error on a page at Cinema Treasures. Elwell designed a theater called the El Rancho in Victorville, California, which was opened in 1950. I just discovered that the El Rancho was featured in the 1950-51 Theatre Catalog published by Jay Emanuel Publications, and the Catalog got his name right.

I haven't been able to find out much about him. Though he is mentioned in a lot of architecture periodicals found at Google Books and the Internet Archive, I haven't had time to look through them yet. He was active at least as early as 1916, and died in 1961. His listing in the AIA directory of 1956 had only his office address, 1200 W. Fifth St., Los Angeles, and no list of his works. A Google search on Howard G. Elwell turns up a few listings for houses in Pasadena and San Marino.

Hollywood Heritage had his 1959 Christian Science Church at 7107 Hollywood Boulevard on its Endangered List in 2012. So far, that's all I've got, but judging from the few buildings I've seen photos of he kept up with the times. The theater in Victorville was clearly Midcentury, and the Hollywood church is very much of its time as well. The doctor's office is quintessential '30s modern. I'd look forward to learning more about Elwell. There might be some unknown masterpieces of his design rotting out there.

Could there have been more than one of these monuments produced? A close comparison of the older and newer photos shows that virtually every detail of the logs is different, as well as the placement and background of the text. In fact, even the text style is subtly different (look at the "S"). I'm wondering if Glendale commissioned a replacement monument as opposed to a restoration. Thoughts?

Thanks for all the Gilmore related photos everyone! Now I know where they were situated. CBS Television City is basically on the site where Gilmore Stadium stood and Gilmore Field is where the Television City studio additions were built, where they tape American Idol and Dancing with the Stars, by the way. (Yes, they tape Fox and ABC shows at CBS Television City!)

I wish one or both of those sites were still there.

I was actually watching a "Hollywood" episode of I Love Lucy this week and because it's raining Fred laments that he can't go see the Hollywood Stars baseball team play (at Gilmore Field)! So it was still there in 1955, but gone by 1960. As has been noted, CBS Television City opened in 1952.

Historic Aerials

All that's left today is the Farmers Market, although South Gilmore Lane acts as a reminder to the past.

I did not know that street was named Gilmore Lane. It runs through the Southern quarter of "The Grove", connecting Third Street and Farmer's Market Lane, and is basically used for deliveries or to connect to the parking garage at the end of Farmer's Market Lane. What looks to be a road in the middle of The Grove is actually a pedestrian walkway with a green trolley (on tracks) that intermittently winds it's way around the place. They have occasionally filmed scenes from Modern Family there.

Right near the Grove entrance and adjacent to the Farmer's Market, there is a small "historical" area with a gas pump and display cases filled with "Gilmore" memorabilia. There are photos of what used to be located all over this area (no aerials though). I assume it's still there, I haven't been in that area for some time, but when I used to go there alot I'd always take a minute or two to appreciate the exhibit.

All 4 corners of Beverly and Fairfax have been posted in the last page or two and, unless it's those buildings right near Herbert's, it doesn't look like it's right on the corner.

In the postcard you posted:

…and in the following photo that HossC posted, I think it's likely the gas station is on the left side of the picture (below) almost halfway up the photo on Fairfax Avenue, closer to Third Street, running along the bottom, and the Farmer's Market.

I wish we had addresses on all of these great old Pasadena homes you've been finding, e_r. I figure they're all long gone, but even if there was one or two still standing in an altered condition, it would be cool to know they're not all completely vanished.

Another Beverly-Fairfax puzzlement? Do any of the aerial photos depict this expansive enterprise? No reason for the recently discussed solitary Gilmore Station to coexist with this.

Several prior posts also included photos of Gilmore's self-serve station. See e.g.,http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=11613 and http://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/...ostcount=19396

Per DWP:
Quote:

Gilmore Self-Service Station located on the south side of Beverly Boulevard east of Fairfax Avenue. View is looking west toward Fairfax. The Fairfax Theater sign (northwest corner of Fairfax and Beverly) is seen above and behind the Gilmore sign. The tower sign for Herberts Drive-In Restaurant (southeast corner of Fairfax and Beverly) can barely be made out in the upper left of photo. CBS Television City would be built at this corner in 1952.

I am intrigued by the C-shaped building at the bottom right of Gilmore Stadium. In addition to the farmer's market, this building and the foliage that surrounds it also remain from the old photo to the new. Zooming in on Google Maps, it is still marked as A.F. Gilmore Co.; is that an administration building for the Farmer's Market? There may be one or two small buildings around it that are also as old.

Stillmore on the Gilmore...

It looks to me like after it was at the southeast corner of Beverly & Fairfax that it may have been moved south on Fairfax, with Herbert's Drive-In replacing it at the Beverly corner. Notice also what appear to be Beverly/Fairfax street signs...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-f...2520AM.bmp.jpg

The building at right is the one indicated by the red arrow below...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g...FAIRARROWS.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5...2520AM.bmp.jpg

You can see the stadium behind the station when it was at 7870 Beverly...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5...2520AM.bmp.jpg

If the station was picked up and moved down Fairfax (and not a new one), it was turned 90 degrees.

In city directories, V. L. Anderson, whose name appears on the station at 7870 Beverly, becomes merely a "gas sta atdt" by 1939...no indication if he may have moved with the building.

Perhaps there were other branches in areas not covered by the L.A. CD (and perhaps we've seen them here), but in the 1942 edition there is only one Herbert's listed, at 7870 Beverly Blvd... .

I wonder how many people would show up for an air race today? When I was four years old it was the greatest joy to see a steam engine train pull in to the station. All of that seems so quaint today.

In the photo above we see thousands of people mesmerized to see these slow moving planes fly by.

My grandmother used to tell of the thrill of riding in an automobile in 1910.
