According to the April 2018 Google Street View, the Portsmouth Hotel doesn't seem to have changed much since you

This GSV is from June 2017, looking east on Pico from just west of Hill. The Portsmouth Hotel is on the southeast corner

In fact, I'm trying to find an example as we speak. (so far nothing)

The W. C. Fields film It's A Gift features a pulley-driven clothesline across an alley as part of the plot. Fields has been driven outside near dawn to get some sleep by his termagant wife, and he keeps getting awakened by annoying sounds. One of these sounds is the squeaking of a pulley as a woman from across the alley is putting fresh laundry out on the line. It is the most annoying squeak ever devised by man.

Here's part of a 1953 LIFE Magazine photo posted by gsjansen in post #3670. From the image above, I've marked the light-colored Stanley Apartments and the brick Winton Apartments immediately below. I've also marked what could be the palm tree from the far left of the image above. The palm tree would be near 3rd, so I'll stick with my original location guess. Despite the tanker looking familiar, I haven't found the color photo anywhere else.

From Wikipedia:
In 1980, the Hercules aircraft was acquired by the Aero Club of Southern California, which later put the aircraft on display in a very large geodesic dome next to the Queen Mary ship exhibit in Long Beach, California. The large dome facility became known as the Spruce Goose Dome. The very large enclosed indoor dome area around the Spruce Goose consisted of meeting and special event space, elaborate audio visual displays about Howard Hughes and the Spruce Goose aircraft, and dining areas for tourists. Many convention groups held large dinners, sales meetings, and even concerts under the wings of the aircraft at night when the Spruce Goose Dome was closed to tourists. In 1988, The Walt Disney Company acquired both Long Beach attractions and the associated Long Beach real estate by Pier J. In 1991, Disney informed the Aero Club of Southern California that it no longer wished to display the Hercules aircraft after its highly ambitious Port Disney plan was scrapped.

After a long search for a suitable host, the Aero Club of Southern California arranged for the Hughes Hercules flying boat to be given to Evergreen Aviation Museum in exchange for payments and a percentage of the museum's profits. The aircraft was transported by barge, train, and truck to its current home in McMinnville, Oregon (about 40 miles (60 km) southwest of Portland), where it was reassembled by Contractors Cargo Company and is currently on display. The aircraft arrived in McMinnville on February 27, 1993, after a 138-day, 1,055-mile (1,698 km) trip from Long Beach. The Spruce Goose geodesic dome is now used by Carnival Cruise Lines as its Long Beach terminal.

My wife and I went to a Highlands festival in early 2017 at the Queen Mary. They're using the Goose's dome as exhibition space now. A tour of the Queen was included with the festival ticket. She's definitely seen better days; rust coming up through peeling paint, the wooden decks are worn and unsealed, etc. I recall an article in the LAT that Long Beach City Audit said it requires repairs in the tens of millions and revenue cant even come close. Such a shame for a beautiful piece of Art Deco design.

While looking for pictures of Wilshire the other day, I stumbled upon this sad picture. Does anyone know the background to this story?

Suicide victim, 26 February 1958. John J. Vandenburgh Junior -- 39 years (jumped from sixth floor of Prudential Building).; Caption slip reads: "Photographer: Paegel. Date: 1958-02-26. Reporter: Thackrey. Assignment: Leaper. These are the mortal remains of John J. Vandenburgh, Jr., 39, who was a statistical analyst for Wilton Becket & Assoc. This seemed familiar, so I dug a little--it was mentioned in this 2012 post, though the picture (which might be the same as yours, Hoss, is missing).

Welton Becket was at 5657 Wilshire, a building we've seen before. It's confusing because the caption to the image says "from the sixth floor of the Prudential Building"--but this wasn't the familiar tall landmark Prudential Building we're all familiar with--it was up the street at 5757--but 5657 did have Prudential offices in it, according to the 56CD. Below is a pic of 5657 from your own post 33294 (2016). The LAPL picture below that is one from a 2011 post of mine.

It's really only 5 floors--I guess poor Vandenburgh jumped off the roof.

The current building at 11911 Gorham Avenue (former home of T Dwight Crittenden) was only built in 1965.

I remember when I was a teenager in the '70s, Jane Russell was doing brassiere commercials on television. At that age, I didn't know who she was or why she would be doing those commercials. Then one day I saw a photo of her from her starlet days and realized "Oh, that's why"

Jane Russell's sagging breasts were giving Mr. Hughes a headache during production of the film. His solution was to have his aircraft engineers design a bra that would fix the problem.

The solution was a bra that contained steel wires and pieces of metal that would lift her breasts to the proper altitude. Upon inspection approval, Mr. Hughes declared that production could continue.

Here's a daytime shot of the receiving hospital at 1337 Georgia Street from 1956. The text across the top says "Georgia Street Police Station Division No 5". The site is now roughly under the middle of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The photoset also includes a picture of its replacement, the Central Receiving Hospital at 500 Loma Drive. We've seen this before in post #34915. In the picture below, Dr. Charles Sebastian, head of the hospital, is standing outside.

The tower and chimneys on the left once belonged to the Mary Andrews Clark building which e_r reminded us of just a few days ago. The building survives, but the tower and chimneys are long gone.

Very much enjoying the posts of Harry's Place, he is a welcome addition to the thread.

Some months back this forum did a wonderful job in locating the Garry Winogrand sailor-in-the-mist walking over the bridge photo as Los Angeles, and not NYC as it is commonly misidentified...here's another Winogrand L.A. picture, dated Jan. 1960.

Looks like the entrance to J J Newberry Co at 5th and Broadway. This is a slightly different angle from 1973, but I think the fire phone box on the left is the one being used by the police officer in the image above. The phone box is no longer there.
