Also, I'm generally a fan of Julius Shulman but the office tower at Space Park is not a favorite of mine. I'm easily irked by multi story buildings so near to single story residential neighborhoods. It sticks out like a sore thumb, in my cranky opinion.

This is how the Fox looked about six years after it opened.

Grapefruit in 1944 was very sour and tart tasting. The canned grapefruit juiced I drank in the late 1940s was intolerable. My brother and I lived on a rabbit ranch in the San Fernando valley at that time.
Our babysitter always had that canned grapefruit juice every morning.....along with Malt-O-Meal.

Grapefruit in 2018 are natural hybrids and considerably sweeter.

The famous "grapefruit scene" with Cagney shoving the fruit in Mae Clark's face wasn't that big a deal back then and the scene happens so fast you almost miss it.

Appreciate the feedback (including the WWII suggestion of lacing grapefruit with NaCl2).

The "gray" 5 cent refund token was silver in color and made of soft aluminum. I would think that material was probably in short supply during WW2, but maybe not. :shrug: (Anecdotal evidence may be that the Ralphs' token is pre WW2 per the Helms token below.) I recall refunds being offered for recycling milk and soda bottles, but unless coinage was in short supply too, that would seem to make the tokens mere novelties. The tokens could also be used as collateral for return of reusable crates, per bottom token. These "trade tokens" probably served not only as advertising, but also an inducement to shop at the issuing store, not unlike discount coupons or being part of a club membership.

I don't remember ever noticing this building before, so I thought that maybe it was never built. However, when I jumped into the Googlemobile, there it was right opposite the Hall of Justice. It looks like it's been modified over the years, but some of the original design elements are still visible. I've inset a slightly larger image of the lettering on the front.

I wasn't able to find any information on Harold Gates.

EDIT. I just found a group of photographs of Harold Gates. I'll post them in just a few minutes.

My son is currently serving in the Air Force so I can relate to the abbreviations. I often have to tell him to slow down and explain them to a civilian like me.

Having been there for graduations I was doubtful when I read this about Lackland but I checked with my source (son) and he confirmed it. There are plenty of runways nearby but technically on other bases of the complex.

The 1929 CD lists the American Automobile Owners Association Inc a few blocks north at 1958 S Figueroa Street. It now seems to be the parking lot for Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

ETA. I've just found this great picture of the building. There's another angle in the set.

I took a closer look at the other view of the American Automobile Owners Association building, and wondered about the building on the right. Zooming in showed a small sign saying "Elgin Arms". The 1930 CD (the same year as the photo) lists it at 525 W 20th Street.

I can't find demo permits for either building, but the Elgin Arms seems to disappear between the 1952 and 1964 images at Historic Aerials, and the AAOA building between 1972 and 1980.

BTW. The structure at the far right that looks like the top of a castle is the extant Mode O' Day/Washington Furniture Co Building at 155 W Washington Boulevard.

A quick search for Veronica Smith Locke only yielded a story about a lady being widowed in Reno several years earlier, although there are links to California (if not LA). The articles are dated July 7/8, 1953. This is from the Reno Evening Gazette. I wonder if this is the same person. Maybe someone with access to the LAT archives can help us out.

This article comes from the March 11, 1947 of the Madera Tribune, which is slightly strange because most sources list Evelyn Winters' death as March 12. Being so close to the murder of Elizabeth Short, her murder is mentioned on many sites. I think all the other articles say she was 42, but ages differences in these reports aren't unusual.

As you can see from the partial sign, 830 Ducommun St was previously home to Armor Paper Products Co Inc. Despite the Ducommun address, the warehouse actually backed onto the river. I've arrowed it in this 1958 view. The building was almost literally in the shadow of the gasometers.

Here's Winters at Ducommun & the Santa Fe Right-of-Way, March 11 of '47. I've covered her up but you can see a hand and foot to give a relative idea as to the positioning of the supine body.

She had been murdered elsewhere and then dragged from a car, approximately ten feet. There was blunt force trauma to the head but the cause of death was stabbing.

Of course one of the most unusual facets of the case was George Wickliffee, who found her, and alerted authorities (a nearby SoCal Gas Co fireman) after he'd kissed her and fondled her breasts (Winters was exposed from the neck down)—they were tipped off by her lipstick on his lips. Wickliffee was thereafter confined to Camarillo.

George Franklin Wickliffee had a long record, and was a professional vagrant and window-peeper.

In the game LA Noire, there's a copycat case as "Evelyn Summers" and when a railroad worker confesses he'd kissed the corpse, Detective Galloway hauls off and clocks him one; well, you can see for yourself.

Ducommun street was named after the Ducommun family who sold various metals.

That name always reminds of when my father died. His die casting company and of course by then my mother owed the Ducommun Company $10,000 [in 2019 that would be about $86,000]. This bill due was for aluminum and zinc he had purchased for making aircraft parts.

Charles Louis Ducommun, a watchmaker by training, emigrated to the US from Switzerland in the early 1840s. He started a general store, providing supplies (and credit) to gold prospectors and other pioneers who had settled in the burgeoning pueblo of Los Angeles. Ducommun Street was named for Charles Louis.

I saw this photo captioned: Barbara Britton at the Hollywood Canteen.

I hadn't seen any exterior photos of the Hollywood Canteen that were similar so I tried to figure out where this was taken. I believe the building at top center is the Guaranty Building located at Hollywood Blvd. and Ivar St. I'm sure it was taken south of there because if it were taken north the Knickerbocker Hotel would block the Guaranty building in some respect. Both the Hollywood Canteen and the USO were a block west of Ivar, so the angle wouldn't be right if Miss Britton were at either of those places.

I don't think it was taken on Vine Street because the Broadway or Plaza would be in the view and I don't recall any trees on the west side in any Vine St. pictures of this area.

Because of this photo...


...and because to the left of the group in the Britton photo there are cars parked there, I believe it was probably taken behind either the CBS Radio Theatre or Tom Breneman's restaurant where he did his radio show.
The first street west is Morningside Court which intersects Selma Ave.

In the left top of this photo is the Guaranty Building. Directly below it in the photo is a three story white building whose configuration looks the same as the building in the background of the Britton photograph.
So the general location for that photo is behind one of the locations fronting Vine Street. Could anyone be more specific?

My apologies again - it looks like I am late to the party. I've had this one push pinned on my Google Map for several years now and when I saw the original post I figured I would be cute and tell you all something new. OOPS. Well I can add this case to my death push-pin map. LOL

Here's an aerial view from December 21, 1941 (we could probably see the Santas on Hollywood Boulevard if it was higher resolution!). The three-story white building is just to the right of the top of the "Ivar Avenue" label. I believe that the building is still there, although most of the windows have been filled. To the left of "V" in the "Vine Street" label is the CBS Radio Playhouse (now the Ricardo Montalban Theatre). My guess would be that Barbara Britton and the sailors were between the CBS Radio Playhouse and Selma Avenue, but I can't work out where the small brick chimney-like structure in the top-right corner of the photo would've been.

This is a detail from a USCDL image...I noticed the billboard across Westmoreland from Bullock's for "The Gillette," which at first I thought might be some new store or restaurant or other. Turns out to be The Gillette Mortuary, now a school with an odd name, nearly under the freeway, at 950 W Washington. I thought we'd seen it here on NLA before, but I couldn't find it readily....

(I don't suppose Gee will be talking about murders or other mayhem...but this got me wondering--how many deaths might have taken place at Bullock's-Wilshire? Anyone know of any jumps from the tower? Have we seen any here on NLA?)

Was Ducommun Street named after the Ducommun family or just Charles Louis Ducommun?

I guess one could ask this about most any street that carries the name of a person.

On a similar note was "Elm Street" named for one specific elm tree or all elm trees.
