Thanks for your help slufty! I remember the building when it was the Esprit store (1980s)

It had one of the most impressive retail interiors in the city (at that time).

*Esprit clothing was pretty expensive so mostly I just walked around and pretended to shop. :sad:

Just learned recently that the original Occidental campus was in East Los Angeles at the current site of Rowan Elementary School. That campus burned in 1896, so this photo might be at the ELA campus.

I'm doing some work on the Richfield and am not having a lot of luck finding a good shot of that NW corner of 6th and Flower pre-1928.

I'm sure at some point I saw an image of area, perhaps from a panorama? But coming up empty now.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

These help a lot, and I am studying these now, and having fun with the time machine areal resource. At this point, they seem like the same trees, close to 80 years ago, but I want to study it more. I'm downloading images as we speak. I'll keep posting as this develops.

The exact corner NW corner of 6th and Flower is cut off in this c. 1916 panorama, but the general area is near the lower right corner.

6th and flower is behind the Los Angeles City Library try goggling "Los Amgeles city Library black and white photos" I think I saw some photos during the construction of that library showing that corner on this website near the beginning.

If you live in California get a library card and password from the Los Angeles City not county Library. Their on line database allows you get sandbord maps form 1901 to 1951. that should get you a footprint of that corner. Also you can get issues of all the LA times newspaper from the city library web site too, The trick to using the times newspaper is to search for somebody common like Roosevelt then almost all the issues from 1931 to 45 are accessible from the times..

I was only an infant at that time....so its hard for me to understand the joy and relief felt by those who had lived through WW II. The faces of the people in those photographs tell part of the story of that day.

The size isn't great, but here's a view from 1927 (which I've enlarged).

Looking southwest across the intersection of Flower and 6th Streets. The Hotel Snow will ultimately become the Southland (by 1916). The Richfield tower will occupy this corner on the right supplanting this little grocery store.

It only appears in the 1928 CD, but I think that the billboard was advertising the Deauville City Club, which was at 525-526 Pacific Bank Building, northwest corner of Hill and Ninth Streets. I'm guessing that it was connected with the one on the coast.

I couldn't find a Sunset Cafe around that area. The corner building (801 W 6th Street) was a restaurant in the mid-20s, but always seems to be listed under the owner's name. I'll keep looking.

The trees on Boyle just north of 4th seem to be good-sized in all four aerials from UCSB (1941, 1949, 1960, 1971). It's hard for
me to believe the trees there are only 50-60 years old, as the city claims.

The Deauville City Club building never actually got off the ground--it was indeed meant to be an adjunct to the one on the coast, which we've seen on NLA before. Among those who hoped to create a unisex downtown club to answer the California and the Jonathan etc were industrialist Charles Wild and hotelier George Hart of Fremont Place and AAA prexy Horace Miller and banker Fred Swensen of Berkeley Square--Morgan Walls & Clements came up with a design for it, as the firm had for the beach club...never built, but the architects did, of course, produce the Richfield building on the same site....
