Your Best Shot of 2011

With 2011 coming to an end I thought it would be cool to start a thread where people could post their favorite or best shot of 2011. Not a contest or anything, just a chance for people to show their work and talk a little about it.

This is my favorite of 2011, taken last April in the Andes of Ecuador.

The Earth is Flat by Porter Yates, on Flickr

The image uses DRI which is similar to HDR but without the tone-mapping. I had to do this in order to capture the entire high contrast scene. To properly expose the sky meant the dark green hills would be deep black. To expose the hills correctly meant the sky would be blown out white. I took three exposures at -3, -1 and +1 exposure stops. The images were then merged in Photoshop where I selected the properly exposed areas from each image.

Here is my favorite from 2011 taken on 1/1/2011 (or 12/31/2010);

It's the New Years eve fireworks display in Melbourne. It took almost 40 pictures to get this one but with the people on the bridge and the fireworks in the background it was my favorite. It was taken with a 5 second exposure.

Hmm, thats a tough one, but I like this one pretty good. Took it in New Orleans a couple months ago.

Great stuff everyone (some serious wide-angle there photoLith)! I'm only editing photos from last May yet, so I haven't gone through most of my 2011s.

I guess of the ones I've gone through, maybe this one? I dunno, I'm terrible at these kinds of decisions.

This is a difficult decision because I have so many different styles and subjects I like to shoot that there's a "best" for each kind. I guess I'll go with this.

HR/DRI is a kind of technique I employ for nearly 95% of my photography. I manually blend the exposures in photoshop, and tone mapped them manually. I don't use any HDR/DRI software at all; I strife for realism, yet surreal and to what I see and remembered what it looks like when I was there, and to what I feel the place meant to me as a photographer. Many people don't like HDR/DRI as they can be too surrealistic or fake... But if properly done it should used as a way to compensate limited dynamic range of a camera and not a tool for artistry fakes.

Most of them require coming at the right time of the day, preferably dawn and dusk hours for an interesting background to work well with the overall composition - and that the elements in the scene compliment well with each other so that it makes sense for the story arc to take place.

Anyway....

Either this:

7 Image HDR/DRI using ND 0.9 soft graduated filter + Lee Big Stopper for smoothed water and cloud effects, with exposures ranging from 120, 320 and 640 seconds. Marina Bay Gardens, Singapore.

Tried out a newly opened park that sits along the coast line, noticed really pretty views of the city. Thank goodness for the stillness of the water in the early hours of the morning...

Or this:

5 Image HDR/DRI using ND 0.9 soft graduated filter + Tiffen ND 1.2 for smoothed fog effects. Sembawang Stateland, Singapore.

Another day with another beautiful morning on a beautiful, not well known part of Singapore... Good ol' Sembawang.

Good shots dudes.

I don't know what I'd pick, I didn't do much photography this year but I managed to get a lot of quality shots. I did some more artistic stuff for my Ottawa shots this year and I got plenty of great shots in Chicago, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Thunder Bay, Kingston, Montreal and Toronto.

Didn't have a great year for photography, I am working way too much. Had a model shoot way back in February, was pretty happy with this one:

HomeInMyShoes Dec 17, 2011 8:57 PM

I took so few photos this year, I don't think I actually have any good ones. I did get a few images that are important to me though.

My son. For him, this year was all about discovering the joys of the world outside the house. He's the hardest thing to photograph because he's only got one speed, flat out. The first day wearing his rubber boots definitely slowed him down.

Flow Me Away

3 Image HDR/DRI using GND 0.9 soft + GND 0.6 hard for higher cloud tonality and smoothed water flowing effects. Labrador Park, Singapore.

One of the most blessed evenings on a rainy December period. Guess I was lucky. Anyway I'm adding and changing my borders to a better format for all my photos. This makes it look like a picture frame!
