The pink champagne on ice And she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device" And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast They stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast |
We saw Julius Shulman pictures of Ralph Flewelling's Warren Lane School a few days ago. I assume there can't be too many architects with that name. This is "Job 4274: Flewelling and Moody, California Institute of Technology, Millikan Library (Pasadena, Calif.), 1967". As has become usual with these larger photosets, I've picked a selection of pictures.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original An arty shot showing the lower floors. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original The surrounding campus, complete with water feature. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original The reception area and elevators. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original One of the upper floors. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original I've saved this shot until last. It shows the inside of the octagonal extension near the fountain. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The library is still standing, and looks unchanged. Just out-of-shot at the top is the recently seen Beckman Auditorium. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original Google Maps |

almost finished http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/jghXCH.jpg http://archives.caltech.edu/photogal...n-library.html "The east and west elevations will be faced with South African black granite fabricated in Carrara, Italy." Here's one more Hoss.
The Throop Memorial Garden in front of the newly built Millikan Memorial Library. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/MOOeTV.jpg http://archives.caltech.edu/photogal...n-library.html I much prefer this garden to what's there now. (oops. see below) __ update: 5:28 PM The Throop garden is still there, I couldn't see it for the trees. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/aWNjJn.jpg google_walking_view http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/OmhUr5.jpggoogle_aerial |
Here are two original slides I found several months ago that I never got around to posting.
#1 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/4bmDvz.jpg I believe that's the Arcade Building hidden behind the bus. (and further down the street is the old Roxie Theater) #2 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/noQ0xE.jpgebay I'm pretty sure the large building on the other side of the freeway is the Mode-O-Day building. (the large 'pylons' along the roof give it away) detail http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/lBzreS.jpg Does anyone know, was 'California Girl' part of Mode-O-Day? |
Many thanks to Odinthor for digging up that 1911 article about the 'Arcade Terrace' entry and steps.
& just as many thanks to Flyingwedge for posting that phenomenal aerial photograph of Arcade Terrace in the earliest days of it's existence. Quote:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/12LlmQ.jpg I agree with t2....it does look like low benches in-between the stanchions. below: You can see where it used to be attached (I think) -It looks too low....but it also looks low in the black & white pic above http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/RukbLi.png There might even be a total of 6 stanchions if you count this one (it's mate is hidden in shadow) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/Lg9M7H.jpg detail of detail __ I believe the original stairs from 1911 are still in place, despite being 106 years old! Note the stairs in the following pics of a hypothetical building on the vacant lot behind 1669. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/kTWqnw.jpg https://www.openlistings.com/p/24-ar...onica-ca-90401 They have the same exact shape as the stairs in FW's 1922 aerial photograph. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/0hGLtu.jpg https://www.openlistings.com/p/24-ar...onica-ca-90401 Today, it's mostly obscured by trees and bushes |

One more thing relating to Arcadia Terrace, what does "Double Corner Only" mean? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/HXrgJc.jpg detail __ OK, I'm done http://imageshack.com/a/img923/7747/oELI3v.gif |

I really liked your story about digging up remnants of the sign in your backyard. __ Out of curiosity, would it be possible to put a red dot where your house is located? originally posted by Mulwray http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/H4fqpp.jpg detail / enlarged And before I forget...welcome to the thread Mulwray. __ |

'mystery' location.
August 11, 1967 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/VSh2Gi.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/metrol...7617320800292/ From the Metro Library and Archive. "This was a temporary Main St. bus station." "Called Terminal # 16 opened early in 1967 and lasted a few short years." __ So where on Main street was this temporary bus station located? (the building doesn't look familiar) and what's that rectangular thingy attached to the bldg with the brackets underneath?? __ |

I wonder where Harlem Place got it's name. __ |
:previous:
Oh wait, I got lost in the alley. The thingy is still there: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/GE...g=w600-h577-no gsv I think it's so one can glance out to see what trucks are in the alley. This is the back of the Security Bank Bldg at 514 Spring Street (now part of the LA Theater Center) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gj...A=w629-h528-no gsv "514 S. Spring Street – Built in 1916, the one-story building was designed by John Parkinson in a Greek-Revival style with Ionic columns. In addition to the columns, the building is known for its lobby with a large 50 by 100-foot stained glass ceiling supported by heavy ornamental bronze cornices and marble walls. It been known over the years as the Security Trust & Savings Building, the Security National Bank Building and the President Trading Company" - wiki Harlem Place was originally "Center Place", but got nicknamed b/c of jazz clubs (I think). I'm sure we've talked about this before. I'm just a little fuzzy right now. |
:previous: Thanks t2
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/vn46BI.jpg I didn't notice until now that the sides are slightly angled. I think I see a plant or two....could it be a terrarium gone awry? or a really shitty bay-window. ;) _ |

I really think it's there to see if the Brinks truck arrived. This was built as a bank and cash transfers were a bit fraught. If you don't believe me just ask Mr Parkinson, he'll know :-) |

Gentrification?
These 1951 Daily News photographs are captioned: "Tenement House, 713 Casanova, Los Angeles"
http://i.imgur.com/J2oEY1F.jpg UCLA Special Collections http://i.imgur.com/Jf8GaDX.jpg UCLA Special Collections Note the multi-ethnic quality of the residents; poverty didn't discriminate, in this case at least. Is that a water heater on the porch? The fire marshal probably was not much in evidence in that neighborhood. I doubted that the house was still there today, but I looked anyway. There is a Casanova near Elysian Park and Dodger Stadium, but there is no 700 block. I guessed that it might have been renamed "Academy Road" based on the street alignments, and that turned out to be the case. Here is a Sanborn map (1950): http://i.imgur.com/DJHX6VO.jpg lapl The house surprisingly is still there: http://i.imgur.com/j7jcODg.jpg bing.com And is now worth well north of $600K! http://i.imgur.com/ePj1FFR.jpg So the tenement achieved its 1951 decrepitude in only 25 years; and 66 years later, gentrification. |
