It's a pair of magnificent bookends from the Los Angeles Public Library.

LOL, I dunno e_r, how do we know they're "antique"? (Legally for something to be antique it has to be at least 100 years old). To me they look like a corporate/donor reward or memento from when the Library was restored/expanded (or maybe just an LAPL gift shop item). In any case, they're not a very graceful take on the stern serenity of the Lee Lawrie originals (and one's missing its book while the other has a chip in its headdress).


But if these guys turn up on eBay, let me know:

№ 555, and it's twin, № 553, fell the same year as the photo, 1924. By then (and probably long before) the pair were called an "apartment house" as stated on the demo permit posted by HossC.

I'm pretty sure I've seen another photo looking north from W 6th & S Hope with the Normal School still in place, but I can't find it right now.

The 1914 CD lists the Schlitz Buffet at 537 S Main Street, so Main 395 must be the phone number.

You're correct T2, they were either given or made available for sale to folk to donated either time or money to the library's restoration. I saw a few of them in people's offices back in my ARCO days.

I see that I'm not the only NLAer looking for pictures of 555 S Hope Street. Above, t2 showed us the 1910 Baist map. Here, I've marked 555 on the 1921 Baist map.

Depite its proximity to both the Normal School, and later the Bible Institute, 555 seems to be camera shy. I found two or three images of the area where it was just feet out of shot.
The best I've come up with so far is this circa 1916 view of the rear. Comparing with the map above, I believe I've arrowed the right building.

Isn't it cool to see through two windows at the same time ? I don't remember many noirish examples of that.

I asked Christine Romero over at the Central Library Store about the bookends
.
Here's her reply:

"These items were from a campaign called Save the Books.
They would have been produced sometime between 1987 and 1993.
They weren’t sold by The Library Store,
so I don’t have any other information on them."


I think ARCO is where I've seen them before too.



Anyway, not precious e_r, so don't worry about them.

From the front 553-555 S Olive appears to be a two-story frame building. The one indicated in the photo is a four-story brick effort which seems to be a wing of the building facing on W 6th (?)

Compare it to the Baist map I posted. I originally thought it would be the building to the left, but the surrounding houses suggest the one I arrowed. See where 555 is relative to the Rosegrove Hotel.
