Hello ER. That's a fantastic old airplane guide booklet. Page 14 shows the defunct Alhambra Airport. The airport was featured in the movie, Hollywood Hotel.

I used to live in a house that was built on the old runway. It was right about where we see the big plane in this photo.

The narrative details flight at about 10,00 feet in a plane that is not pressurized as they are today. It was noisy and one could actually see the ground.

Lastly they bravely write about a possible engine failure. Yikes...!!! In today's world that subject would be taboo in a passenger book.

Beetle Protest
 

Well ER, I wish you had posted this one a day or two earlier so I could have bid on it, but that point notwithstanding, when it comes to serendipity you sure know how to pick'em!

The fellow in the dark jacket at the extreme left of the photo is none other than a teenage "Wig-Wag" on one of the last daytime run excursions during the last day of service for streetcars in Los Angeles over the weekend of March 30/31, 1963. The fellow to my right is my friend Richard who went on to become a transportation engineer and served in management for several major U.S. city transit operations. I believe the fellow leaning into the VW is another friend who went on to a career the LA DWP.

Attached are two documents from that day including the solicitation to ride the very last PCC car to run before the shut down and conversion to GM Dreamliner Busses. That run began at 11:00 PM on the evening of March 30th. Needless to say we all rode that last run!

I had no luck looking for James Copeland on Genesee in the City Directories, so I turned to Google Maps. Near the northern end I found 1600 N Genesee Avenue.

It's now surrounded by a hedge, and some of the features have been changed, but the circular detail just below the roof remains the same (there's another on the back). I found a build date of 1922 and "Year Renovated" date of 1942 on redfin.com.

It says "Conveniently located on the Casino Floor."
I don't recall ever hearing about a casino in the Ambassador Hotel. :shrug:

Casino does not only apply to a gambling establishment but can be a building (as at Avalon, Catalina Island) or an area for social amusement. The term maybe fell out of use for the Ambassador for one reason or another at some time.

It was a great airline guide. At one point, one of the airlines was offering flights (transcontinental, I think), that would fly in daylight hours; land as the sun was setting, and the passengers would continue in Pullman cars; then they'd meet a plane the next morning and resume their journey. It was faster than going the entire distance by train.

Now that's pretty amazing! You're a good looking bloke Wig_Wag.

LAPL has around 300 pictures of the interior, exterior and surrounding buildings of the Ambassador Hotel taken by Tom Zimmerman in 2005. Sixteen of these picture claim to be taken on the "Casino Level", but not one shows a casino, so I guess Hollywood Graham's explanation applies. Here's a selection including their descriptions.

Interior view of the Ambassador Hotel, where a beautifully decorated lobby greeted guests and visitors upon their arrival. The carpeted lobby shows separate groupings of couches, chairs and table lamps, as well as lavish chandeliers the length of the corridor. The Controller's Office is the 1st doorway on the left, a stairwell leading to a lower floor is also on the left next to a column, and the "Health Club and Street Parking" doorway is at the end of the hallway. The hotel's demise is visible along the ceiling, with chunks of paint seen peeling off.

I think the banner next to the Barker Bros sign is advertising the premiere of 'Mary Poppins'. 'The Night of the Iguana' and 'Mary Poppins' both came out in August, 1964.
There are more pictures of this building as both the Paramount and the El Capitan in post #7156. Barker Bros is now the Disney Studio Store.

Nope! I never get tired of seeing photos of it, and every time I pass that block I am saddened about the loss of such an elegant building.

Coincidentally, earlier this evening I was searching the web for a copy of The Kraft Music Hall radio program from Christmas Day, 1941, and I stumbled across this slightly painful anecdote about something that happened at NBC's Hollywood location.

According to Carroll Carroll, principal writer on Kraft Music Hall: Back when the past was the present, and I was writing Bing Crosby's Kraft Music Hall Thursday nights on NBC, one of those rare few was our engineer Murdo MacKenzie. This is the Temple of Truth, built by Louis Waynai, a 54-year-old Hungarian cabinet maker, to house the world's largest Bible. The Bible measured 43.5 inches high and 98 inches wide when open, and had a 34 inch spine when closed. Apparently, his original idea was to exhibit the bible in his own house, but he ended up having to build this little church instead.

None of the articles I found gave an address for the Temple of Truth, but the City Directories provided me with an address of 1165 E 61st Street for Louis Waynai and his wife. There's a small parking lot there now, but at 1167 E 61st Street is the building below. Obviously, the dome is missing, but the detail on the porch looks the same, and the window configuration also matches (I think the pointed tops were just painted on). If it had been on the other side of the street, it would have been lost when the Diego Rivera Learning Complex was built a few years ago.

I expect you're all wondering what happened to the Bible. According to an article I found at blogs.acu.edu, the Bible was purchased in 1947 by Rosen Heights Church of Christ in Ft Worth, Texas. In 1956, the congregation donated it to ACU (Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas), where it was exhibited in the Library until 2013. After that, ACU agreed to loan the Bible to the Green Collection of Oklahoma City to be displayed as part of its touring exhibit (it can be disassembled into 31 sections for moving purposes).

This is in Long Beach. That modern high-rise on the right is the Royal Palms, the older high-rise on the left is the Lafayette.

This must be taken from a balcony at the Long Beach Towers, at 600 E. Ocean, at Atlantic. The same circular driveway is still there, though the planter box has been modified.

Here's a clipping from the October 12, 1958 edition of the Independent Press-Telegram. It advertises Joseph Salon Shoes' third anniversary in Long Beach, and gives an address of 547 East Ocean Boulevard.

The January 24, 1960 edition of the same paper contains this advert for a sale, and also includes one for the Parisienne clothes store which is in the center of e_r's picture. Their address was 539 East Ocean Boulevard.

Observation
 

The end of the year is an opportunity to reflect on the good and not so good things in one's life. I am grateful for stumbling into this forum two years ago. It has provided many hours of diversion and more importantly, education about the city most of us love, and some of us hate.

I have met an LA Noirisher in person (3940dxer), and have had interesting correspondence with many others (e.g. HossC, ProphetM, et al.)

But most of all, I'd like to thank e_r for keeping it all going. Well done.
