Exactly what do they think they can accomplish, other than providing work for some attornies/lobists/friends? I mean, is this any real threat to the project or are they just throwing away money to show that they are angry?

AAF owns the tracks and right-of-way. They are a private company operating without any subsidy. At this point, what could these counties come up with to stop the project?

Jasonhouse Feb 18, 2015 1:06 AM

^Sounds like a slush fund to me. $4.1 million to "fight" something which can't be fought? There's really no other reasonable explanation.

chris08876 Feb 18, 2015 1:15 AM

There too much money to be made for this to even be a threat. It won't and they will need a lot more money to fight something on this scale. More of a publicity stunt to try to get negative views on the project if anything, but ... this will commence as planned and there is site work, so its not going to stop because of this vote or a iota of a complaints.

. Here we have a great project which can bring mass transit to Florida and their complaining. Shame on them! Not everybody can get what they wan't, and they aren't going to stall this project because of it.

Take a screenshot in acrobat x or reader and save it as a jpeg then use a file uploading service.

The tracks go right through the heart of downtown Ft. Pierce, Jupiter, and Port St.Lucie, and Vero Beach. AAF could probably get them off their backs by saying if you build stations at your own expense we will stop the trains there a few times a day (definitely not every train, that would slow down the Miami to Orlando trip too much).

Guess I'll stop spending money in Indian River and Martin Counties.

New Metromover fare rolls ahead

Quote:

A Miami-Dade commission committee has approved a plan to charge Metromover passengers to ride the elevated transportation system. The 4.4-mile system that serves downtown Miami and Brickell is currently free.

The decision came after much debate.

Commissioners who backed the change said charging would help beef up transit department coffers and that Miami-Dade should tap into this revenue source, especially now that a building boom is swelling Brickell and downtown.

Commissioner Barbara Jordan, a co-sponsor, said charging a fare is a way to transfer the cost of public transportation to people who can more afford it, such as those living and working downtown, from those who can least afford it, meaning people who don’t qualify for a county subsidy to use mass transit in other parts of the county.

“If we are going to have this to continue to be free, then we’re losing out on opportunities of growth and development in downtown from a constituency who can more afford to pay,” she said. “To me, we’re transferring it from where we could give discounts to people who can’t afford it to people who can afford it and we’re letting them ride free.”

Others on the dais said a paid system would cut ridership and that the financials don’t work out to give the county a solid yield.

“If there is a huge surplus to be made, then I would be supportive,” said Commissioner Dennis Moss. “But there is not a huge surplus to be made.”

If a 50-cent fare is charged, it could take the county five to 10 years to recover the initial capital expense, according to a county analysis. In addition, it would cost the county $475,000 a year to operate and maintain a fare-collection system.

Metromover and its fares have nothing what-so-ever to do with FEC, or AAF.
I wish there was a better thread to post this bit of news on. ;)

What's current planned start of revenue service? 2017? Will they open the entire Miami-Orlando line to passenger service at once or will they do it in legs like how they have funded it?

Actually, they will start from Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-West Palm Beach in end of 2016 and later in 2017, they will extend to Orlando.

I suppose there are some who believe so. But FEC doesn't need AFF as a reason to double track their corridor, increase freight traffic would suffice.

On track: Details for downtown Miami railway hub are revealed

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/loca...0NEW%20PPP.JPG

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/loca...0News%20rk.JPG

Quote:

Work has now begun on a new station at the same spot that will bring back passenger train service — this time between Miami and Orlando.

Though the overall plan for the rail and business complex was disclosed last year, executives of All Aboard Florida recently described specific new details on how the station will operate and what its associated towers and buildings will contain. They also provided a timeline for construction of various structures that will make up the station and business hub they call MiamiCentral.

[...]

Three towers will rise from the top of the elevated platform, Sanders said.

On the north end, a 10-story tower will house offices. On the south end, two other towers — one 39 stories and the other 33 — will be built for apartments. One of the towers will contain 450 units and the other 350.

Residents will have amenities that include pools, dog-walking areas, a jogging track and a basketball court.

The elevated platform and the towers rising from the top are all part of project’s first phase of development, along with a separate building just to the west of MiamiCentral where All Aboard Florida will house its headquarters, a parking lot with 1,181 spaces for passengers, more office space, and retail outlets.

On the elevated platform itself, All Aboard Florida envisions rail tracks for its Miami-Orlando passenger trains and for Tri-Rail, which is planning to operate commuter service out of the MiamiCentral station.

Workers are now setting up the foundation for the structure, drilling the holes where massive beams will be installed to hold elevated tracks. Sanders said he expects the beam work to be completed by November. Then workers will begin building the towers. Under the current plan, MiamiCentral will open by the end of 2016, Sanders said.

The office tower and the residential towers are expected to be completed by 2017.

For now, the contractor, Suffolk, is drilling 1,680 piles into the ground, some going 60 feet deep and others 115 feet, to support the elevated structure.

“We will have four rigs, a rig on each block, drilling piles and filling them up with concrete every day, so the entire building can sit on these fingers that go down into the ground,” Sanders said.

In the second phase of the project, Sanders said, All Aboard Florida plans to build a tower just south of the elevated station to house a hotel and more residential apartments. The work is expected to begin in mid- to late-2017.

When completed, the hotel-residential tower would rise to about 850 feet, Sanders said.

All Aboard Florida expects to start express passenger train service in two phases. The first is from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach in late 2016 and the second to Orlando in 2017.

Sounds like it is progressing quite nicely!

How cool would it be to live in one of those high rises above the podium housing the station

They need to run a spur to Ft. Myers/Naples. I realize that's quite unlikely but if AAF is as successful as we all think they will be, maybe we will see the public clamoring for new rail lines that provide service all over the state. It's happening in Virginia, they've had success increasing service to stations in the state and are now expanding passenger rail to places that haven't had it for decades (ie the Roanoke expansion)

Plus if they made it to Ft. Myers/Naples it's then only 130 miles more to connect to Tampa. There's already the possibility of a planned expansion to Tampa (from Orlando) right? I'm sure that's at least a decade away.
