This statue, which is 105 years old, has a very interesting history. I won't post all of it, due to forum rules, but you can read it here (link below):

http://www.metnews.com/articles/2006...ives103006.htm

It's Stephen M. White, the "Father of Los Angeles Harbor."

Quote:

The statue was moved to its present location, at the entrance to Cabrillo Beach off Stephen M. White Drive, on Feb 23, 1989. A report in the San Pedro News Pilot says:

“Thanks to the persistence of local residents and family descendants, the 81-year-old bronze statue of the former U.S. senator responsible for locating a federal breakwater in San Pedro was finally unveiled Thursday at its new spot overlooking the now thriving harbor.”
After trying for decades to move the statue, they finally did it!

I love these color photographs e_r. It's the closest to actually being there back then.

__[/QUOTE]

This is the campus of LA Trade Tech College, c. 1958/59. I can pin point to that time because the picture predates the culinary arts’ building that was opened around 61/62. The campus had been converted from the original Polytechnic High School in the mid 50’s. I attended some design classes there from 1960 to 62.
The old buildings that are no longer standing include the old high school gym (white bldg. to extreme left on photo and the engineering design building to the right of the gym (peeking out from behind the three story building that is left of center). Looking at Google Maps, most of the other buildings are still in place. The old original high school was built about 1905 and was replaced by those shown here – I’m guessing after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. There are many photos of that original campus and if I’m not mistaken including some on this forum.
Anyone have more history on the high school as it evolved?

That's the American Cement Building, 2404 Wilshire. The American Cement Corporation was headquartered there until the late 70's. I guess the exterior reflects the company's desire to show how "pretty" cement is. It's been lofted and is often used as a shooting location ("Kill Bill",etc).

It says "Al Herd" and I just found this obit in the LA Times for 1997:

Alva Herd; Automobile Dealer and Real Estate Broker

Alva (Al) Herd, 91, a major Southern California automobile dealer and real estate broker. Born in Glenwood Springs, Colo., Herd moved alone to Oakland when he was 13. He gravitated to Los Angeles in 1921 and a decade later opened a car dealership at Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. He conducted automobile auctions in four states and was one of California's largest dealers in the 1930s and 1940s. Herd switched to real estate in 1947, brokering land purchases for what is now the City of Industry, Rancho Mirage, the Del Amo Shopping Center and the Howard Hughes RKO Ranch. Herd handled sales of estates to celebrities in Beverly Hills, Brentwood, along the Sunset Strip and in the Hollywood Hills. He earned national publicity as one of the first to use creative financing packages when inflation pushed up housing prices in the 1970s. On Sunday in Los Angeles.
Not sure if there is any relation to Bill Heard.

Welcome, AtlantaGuy! Personally, I'm not able to contribute much, since my hometown is Albany, NY. But, like you, I have come to appreciate all the hours and detective work that others have put into this site. The history of Los Angeles is simply amazing, and since it is such a new city, that history is often in pictures so we can see where she once was, and where she is now. I hope you visit this site every day, as I do. There seems to be no end to the surprises, mysteries, and drama of this great city.
BTW, I like your avatar, we may be "brothers."

atlantaguy Jun 9, 2013 2:26 AM

^Thanks so much, Albany NY!

Sadly, I don't visit this thread every day, but I should. I find it absolutely fascinating, and I have a very deep love affair with Los Angeles. I don't get there as often as I would like to, but am fortunate to visit several times a year as my favorite couple in the world live there and I work virtually for a SoCal firm.

And we probably are brothers if you like and "get" my avatar! ;)

Many communities have their own "Dogtown." E.g., St. Louis. Santa Monica, especially near Ocean Park, is occasionally given the moniker, "Dogtown." Yes, skateboarders hail from the area (bottom), but is there a definitive reason for/origin of the nickname as used in SM?

Playa Del Rey evidently led the way in Beach funiculars - for 7 or 8 years.

Good eye KevinW, I believe you're correct. I didn't even notice the "maehome" structure in this photograph.
(I was referring to a different pic in BRR's post)

The Pan American Building is also visible in this bw...also from the 1960s. (the Million Dollar Theater building is visible at right)

I don't know if I am right but the dark blotches on the beaches look like tar. I remember in the early fifties Santa Monica beach had a lot of tar washing up on the beach. It was gooey stuff.

I believe this might be a reference to my "maehouse"?

I always associate Playa Del Ray with Anissa Jones who played Buffy Davis on Family Affair. Here are some links.

Just out of curiosity, on the previous page, what in the heck are all those people at the West Port Beach Club looking at?!? They seem to be fixated on something going on outside the frame...:???:

As best I can tell, it is "a pool show." (Before TV and computer generated graphics, folks were content to stare at pools. :koko: If you were thinking "Goat Gland Extravaganza", that was rarely advertised, Doctor supervised and performed by candle light on Catalina - or Monkey Island! :boogy: Photographer, Herman Schultheis, was evidently attracted to many things, architectural. ;) )

I have a question about Bob Brooks' Seven Seas. What is this "Rain on the Roof" mentioned in it's advertising?

Was it mostly a 'sound' thing...like rain hitting a tin roof? ...or could you actually see the rain? (through faux windows)
