http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/LO35WT.jpg :previous: As you can see, there are other interesting things in this aerial, like the diagonal slash of land at left, no doubt a remnant of the former railway line. The rectangular pinkish building just above the diagonal line, is an attractive 1926 Water & Power building. _ |

Here's the Southern Pacific RR line on the 1910 Baist map. I moved the compass rose to show the orientation. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original www.historicmapworks.com |
:previous: Thanks Hoss, this map is really interesting.
I couldn't help but notice the dead-end spur angling northeast, away from the curve -did it eventually merge, at a later date, with the P.E. tracks on San Pedro St? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/D8K4NV.jpg http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/...ys/California/ I just realized this is the line heading over to Exposition Park. (which we've discussed on NLA more than a few times) ________ sidenote: when I was exploring the map at historic_map_works I noticed the date is 1910. "From Los Angeles 1910 Baist's Real Estate Surveys, California Published by G. W. Baist in 1910" Is this correct? |

This is it, right? (red arrow) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/egHEzf.jpg eBay Just for fun I thought I'd mess with this aerial with my very limited computer skills. The BLUE curve is the 'Gaffey Bulge', and my arrow points to Warehouse No.1 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/K2c8cg.jpg google_earth Looking at this, it appears the parade ground doesn't line up correctly with the B&W postcard image. So perhaps the photographer wasn't located at the 'Gaffey Bulge' after all, but further north on Gaffey Street. Quote:

Street Car Strike. In the more violent occurance, a trolley motorman who was fleeing from the threat of a beating, rounded the corner in his speeding car and crashed into the rear of another car, which had been stalled by a crippling of a third car. More than 20 persons from the center and third car were flung from their seats and suffered cuts and bruises. Photo shows the ambulance taking away the injured passengers from the three-car crash." It's time for another Julius Shulman guessing game. Can you work out who this duo are? The pictures date from 1948. I bet GW knows as he's identified them before.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original They were architects. Here they are possibly at the drawing board. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original This last image (there are more in the photoset) shows one of their creations in the background. They also designed the Pan-Pacific Auditorium and the General Petroleum Building amongst others. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...8.jpg~original Did you guess? This is "Job 169: Wurdeman & Becket portraits, 1948". Welton Becket is the one on the left, with Walter Wurdeman on the right. You can see them in their offices in the middle of post #33869. PE Streetcar Location.
ER, this car is leaving the Watts Car House at 103rd street for a run to 6th & Main streets station in Downtown LA. The buildings in the background are those of Markham Middle School on the Grandee Avenue side. The school is now heavily fenced off but the building are still in their original brick.

In 1925, Mrs. Wrigley built a chimes tower on the edge of Grey's property to loudly chime the hour every fifteen minutes. The tower was supposed to be a gift to the people of Avalon but the story goes that Mrs. Wrigley actually built it to annoy Grey. |
Gardenea Wig-Wag
Thanks, for posting these photos Bristolian! I was not aware this wig-wag still existed. Also, I have never seen one with a banner (the round disc containing the light) as pummeled as this one!

Jack, I figured if anyone would appreciate this, it would be someone known as Wig-Wag. I would guess it's pretty hard to find parts for these nowadays. |
Following on from yesterday's Wurdeman & Becket portraits, here are three Julius Shulman photos of one of their designs. This is "Job 488: Wurdeman & Becket, Ohrbach's Offices, 1949". No location is given, but I'm guessing somewhere in LA. Including a duplicate, I've left out four pictures from this set.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original That's a pretty funky wall. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original I tried to work out what the posters on the right were showing, but the only word I could read was Ohrbach's. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute |
:previous: I really like the stylized musicians and dancers in the 'Funky Wall', but that wall with the scrawny philodendrons is pretty lame.

"Arsenal of Deadly Weapons Found in Bedroom of 13-Year-Old Boy."
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/9EDi1C.jpg eBay details http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/Fp8FKe.png The only 'Duby' listed in the 1929 Los Angeles Directory is a Lawrence K. Duby (probably the boy's father) at 822 S. Orange drive. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/CjIKNw.jpg lapl So that places the boy's arsenal near a busy shopping area (a block and a half south of Wilshire Blvd. and two blocks east of La Brea) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/44vjuw.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/8FwPu2.jpggoogle_earth While looking at this close-up aerial I tried to imagine which part of the house was the boy's bedroom. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/1XL3bQ.jpg google_earth Then I thought to myself, "hmmmmm...maybe there are some interior photographs online." Sure enough, I found the old 'Duby' house in a real estate listing.....and yes, there were 63 photographs! (some were duplicates) After going through the photos, I decided this was probably the boy's bedroom that contained the deadly arsenal all those years ago in August 1929. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/V2toMP.jpg http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/82...20607019_zpid/ I wonder if anyone has thought to dig up the backyard? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/FGD5lP.jpg http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/82...20607019_zpid/ for bodies __ |
