Columbia Studios was located in Hollywood's "Gower Gulch", so this must be the Columbia Ranch in the valley.

I don't believe this photo of the Gardena Pacific Electric station has been seen here. I'm not sure of the exact location but I think the route ran along Vermont Avenue in Gardena.

Great post on the Inkwell and V Williams, T2! My dad's side of the family came to LA in 1944, and by the time my father was old enough (around the early 50's) the beaches weren't as segregated ,we have pictures somewhere of them at Venice,and riding rides at P.O.P., which was better than Disneyland but not as good as the Pike in LB. And i love the Motor lodge set Hoss.

Just a quick aside since you found it unusual... I've got photos of two separate occasions when my oldest aunt and uncle (we think) posed in a cart hitched up to a goat, circa 1916-17. There's a photo of my Dad from the late 1930s as well, but on a pony (and in western costume!). These were all in central Iowa however so I'll not include them here.

The route to Gardena did run along Vermont to just south of Gardena Blvd, then curved to the west. At Normandie, a line branched off to Torrance and San Pedro, while another continued westerly/southwesterly to Redondo Beach. Much of the trackage to Torrance survives, while there is no trace of the Redondo line after the tracks dead end into a lumberyard on Western Av just south of 166th St.

I have no idea where the station was, I never heard about a location in any of my Pacific Electric reading.

I have some, (somewhere) showing family members as children, in Burbank, with a goat cart too. The cart looks exactly like the one in the picture.

I think this might be the same car wash I just posted. It looks like the same car anyway (and it was in the same group of slides)

At least one of the soundstages which back up to Pass avenue are still there. A long narrow storage building next to the sound is also still there as is the fountain and pool located on the curved street in the middle of the property.

The property had bad fires in 1970 which wiped out a lot of the sets. The first fire burned a quarter of the lot. I could see the glow from the fires from my house on the hill, about three miles away. Some sets were rebuilt but then burned again in later 1970. The north east corner was sold off at some point not too long after that and there was a supermarket put in and various shops, fast food and a drug store (now CVS).

I remember that at the inside corner of the retail area where there was some parking, there were a number of feral cats which apparently roamed the movie lot and were being fed on the wall between the retail space and the lot by someone. I had an aunt and uncle who lived in the neighborhood and they had some "overflow" cats in their yard as well.

As T2 says, the original picture is mirrored, as is every other copy that I found. The largest version seems to be the one at photos-albums.com. I cropped the important corner and flipped it.

The only vintage address I could find for Alert Cleaners is 2000 E Rosecrans Avenue, Compton. Just west of there is the extant Compton Car Wash.

Looking at Historic Aerials, it looks like the curved sculpture was still on the roof up until 2004 (below) - check out the shadow. Sadly, it's gone by the first GSV image in 2007.

One thing caught my attention ER. Its the 1908 Art Nouveau swirling lines that surround the map. They seem to dominate the whole piece. :previous:

This is part 2 of Julius Shulman's Franciscan Motel pictures. These photographs date from two years after the ones I posted yesterday. This one is "Job 1085: Franciscan Motel (Los Angeles, Calif.),1951". Although the "F" on the chimney was visible in the earlier images, the sign along the front of the building appears to be new.

The motel was obviously newly built in 1949, as the 1948 aerial view shows a cleared lot. The completed motel can be seen in the 1952 image.

Historic Aerials

The buildings nearest the freeway were demolished sometime between 1972 and 1980. The ones at the back of the lot, however, survive today. They are now in what seems to be the north parking lot of the Ford Theatres.
