Not since the King of Skull Island was brought to shore has the city gone Ape over such a spectacle. Wasn't expecting a line (its only been here a few days), but there was one.

Wow that statue is huge, is that new?

I'm sure this has been mentioned a lot but I must say I'm a little concerned that phase II will just exacerbate the ~1000' plateau in the area. Hopefully there's some height variation and the designs aren't too boxy / all blue glass.

With Calatrava, Gehry, SHoP, and I think Stern coming, there will certainly be variety.

It is nice, all of the traditional places (Macys, Saks) are all getting their holiday displays on. This is the newest of the New York traditions. Despite the current atmosphere, the holidays must go on. I'm in the area basically every day, and will certainly enjoy it. (socially distancing of course)

We all said it was inevitable way back when they presented the design. And now it's closed while they work on a solution. Which will probably inevitably be higher railings. I still am a little mind-boggled that they just didn't built it with higher railings on the exterior in the first place.

Tragic? Yes. Sad? Yes.

But let's not fool ourselves. It is no more tragic here than it is when it happens everywhere else in the city. It's far too often that something like this happens in the city, but if it happens in the polished west side? Shock and awe that this could possibly happen. Only if you live in a bubble of course.

Mom Jumps off N.Y.C. Building with 5-Year-Old Daughter, Killing Them Both in Murder-Suicide
Sources say the tragic incident was captured by surveillance cameras

By Chris Harris
January 12, 2021

Quote:

The murder-suicide happened at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Sources tell PEOPLE Patchin brought her young daughter to Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, where the two visited with one of Patchin's friends.

Police sources say Patchin can be seen in surveillance footage on the roof of a building on West 53rd Street. In the video, she is seen climbing over a safety gate, the sources confirm. She then picks up her daughter, Olivia, and jumps 12 stories to the ground.

But they keep putting up these damned buildings all over the city. They were warned that something like this could happen.

It goes on and on and on, far too often, far too tragic. But let's not fetishize it when it happens at the Hudson Yards. It happens far too often everywhere. And sadly, that will continue. Get equally outraged when it happens everywhere.

The state’s massive development plans for the area surrounding Penn Station now includes affordable housing.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that the 20 million square feet of development planned for the neighborhood would not only include retail and commercial space, but also housing — a significant chunk of it affordable.

Officials had previously drafted a proposal to develop 10 buildings with more than 1,000 hotel rooms and 14 million square feet of office space, according to a scope of work issued in December.

But during a briefing to elaborate on his myriad State of the State proposals, Cuomo unveiled more extensive plans, including up to 1,400 affordable units. The governor said the state would make “14 building sites available” for the development and that affordable homes would be the priority.

The four additional buildings are planned for two state-owned sites next to and across the street from the Javits Center, according to state officials.

Empire State Development, the state’s development arm, initially envisioned only commercial space for the eight sites in the immediate vicinity of Penn Station. But in its final plan, the agency opened the door to three of those sites having residential space. To allow for the development of these and the other five sites, the state is seeking to override city zoning regulations to construct larger buildings.

The new buildings around Penn would generate revenue to help pay for the station’s redevelopment. The state plans to add another eight tracks by acquiring a block south of Penn, which contains 51 separate properties.

It seems these are the sites (in red) the state will use for affordable housing...
