Christmas Tree Lane

CHRISTMAS TREE LANE

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6...745b19c970b-pi LAT

Christmas, circa 1938. Thousands of cars rumble down Altadena's Santa Rosa Avenue for “The Mile of Trees.”
(The article says it wasn’t really a mile long and that it is now known as Christmas Tree Lane.)
…by 1945 close to a quarter of a million visitors drove along Christmas Tree Lane at year's end with car lights off to heighten the effect.

Story about it HERE!

Non-holiday view, undated.

I don't deny that it's a cool looking building and I'm proud of it and all but every time I see certain photos of
L.A. City Hall from that certain angle, I'm reminded of a gigantic Lego penis.
It's just too obvious.
What were they thinking? Who were they fooling? Sublimation at it's finest?

You may be right about it being an old transit building.

Apologies if it's been posted already, but according to the 1938 Los Angeles telephone directory this was the AJ Bayer Iron Company. While I don't have any definite knowledge or expertise in the subject, it does makes sense that foundries and ironworks would tend to be near rail lines, given the tonnage and volume of the materials they handled.

A casual Google search shows that the Weakly Freak was being "publisht weekly" at least as early as 1914

If memory serves, we saw Lawrence Of Arabia and The Bible there, when I was larval.

Sometime after it was Fiorucci's, I think, it became a branch of the Israel Discount Bank. (An odd name, I always thought, since virtually any commercial bank is a bank of discount, as opposed to a bank of issue which is almost always the central bank of a country.

More than wild animals in Griffith Park

Here is a new (to us at NLA anyway) photograph of murder victim Jean Spangler superimposed over Griffith Park's Fern Dell Canyon.
http://imageshack.us/a/img850/6924/oknx.jpg
http://photos.lapl.org/carlweb/jsp/F...Number=5201259

Below is FredH's in-depth post on the Spangler murder.

Jean Spangler was a 26 year old dancer at the Earl Carroll Theatre and Florentine Gardens,
and a struggling actress who had landed only a few bit parts in movies.

http://imageshack.us/a/img850/9240/latimesblog.jpg
latimesblog

She lived on Colgate Avenue in the Park La Brea area with her mother, daughter, and sister-in-law.
About 5:00 p.m. on October 7, 1949, she went out, telling her sister-in-law that she
was going to see her ex-husband about a child support payment, then go on to a night shoot at a
movie studio. Except for a brief sighting at the nearby Farmer’s Market an hour later, she was never seen again.

When she did not return home the next day, her sister-in-law reported her missing. Since she had a reputation as
a “party girl”, the police did nothing, figuring that she would show up in a day or so. On October 9th, a Griffith Park
worker found her purse near the Fern Dell entrance to the park.

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/1/crackeddotcom.jpg
cracked.com

The purse had a torn strap and contained a strange hand written note. The note said, “Kirk, Can’t wait any longer.
Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work best this way while mother is away.” The purse prompted an extensive search
of the park, but nothing else was found.

http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/4...nfreedotco.jpg
z10dotinvisionfree.com

The police pursued several lines of inquiry:

The ex-husband, a plastic manufacturer named Dexter Benner, was interviewed. He claimed that he had not seen
Jean for several weeks prior to her disappearance. His story was backed up by his new wife Lynn, who had been
previously married to Mickey Cohen associate, Ely Lasky. A check with the studios around town also revealed that
none of them had a movie shoot scheduled that night.

http://imageshack.us/a/img189/4360/z...nfreedotco.jpg
z10dotinvisionfree.com

Word spread from a couple of Jean’s friends that she was three months pregnant. The police figured that the Dr. Scott
mentioned in the note was an abortionist, who may have botched things and disposed of her body.
A search for Dr. Scott came up empty.

A few days into the investigation, the actor Kirk Douglas (after reading the story about the note) called the police to say
that he may have briefly met her on the set of his last movie, “Young Man With a Horn”. Jean had a bit part in this movie
as a hula dancer. The police thought that it was strange that Douglas just happened to call them with this information,
but they could make no connection to her disappearance. Some people thought that Spangler and Douglas had indeed dated
several times, but no one had any solid evidence.

Jean had also been seen in Palm Springs a few days prior to her vanishing, with a couple of Mickey Cohen’s associates,
David “Little Davey” Ogul and Frank Niccoli. Strangely enough, both of them had also recently disappeared. Rumor had it
that Niccoli had been dumped into a lime pit in a Cucamonga vineyard and his keys were found down a sewer on
Santa Barbara Avenue. Of course, people began to have sightings of the three of them as far away as El Paso, Texas.
Niccoli was also supposedly spotted in Mexico with his hair bleached blond and a “nose spreader” up his nostrils to change
his appearance. Neither Ogul nor Niccoli were ever seen again.

The real loser here was reportedly Mickey Cohen, who had bailed out the pair at a cost of $75,000 and now had to pay up
the bail money. One report had it that this was the reason that Mickey had to liquidate his haberdashery store in Los Angeles.

Since the Black Dahlia murder was still fresh in people's memories, evryone expected to find Jean's body hacked to pieces
somewhere around town.

Jean Spangler was never seen again and the case is still open in the Los Angeles Police files.

He appears in the 1910 Census and again in the 1930. Through at least 1927 his wife's name was Eva Scott Fenyes. She died in February of 1930. The 1930 census then shows his wife's name as Leonora Curtin with a daughter named Leonora Curtin. That census was taken in April of 1930. He was a fast worker to bury a wife in February and have another one by April. The daughter is probably a child from his second wife's first marriage, since she was born in Colorado in 1906. Race/LA & CityRace

I have not seen Race/LA mentioned on this forum thread before; do any of you guys know about it?

Race/LA started in 2004 and I have participated in one of these.
From the website: http://www.racela.com/about_rla.html

In Race/LA, teams of two make their way to locations around the L.A. area - some famous and some little-known - performing challenges and solving clues that lead to their next destinations, all while racing against other teams in a heated competition to reach the finish line first!

Inspired by TV's The Amazing Race, and now in its ninth year, Race/LA takes you on a round-the-world adventure right here in Los Angeles. In each race, players make their way to many cultural, historical, natural and entertainment-related attractions, from hidden Hollywood secrets to spectacular architectural treasures, and from tranquil parks and gardens to frenetic urban shopping areas.

Spend an unforgettable day on a uniquely awesome journey that will have you discovering new places, solving challenging clues, meeting new people and having an amazing day of fun that you'll never forget!

Race/LA is done a couple times a year and it takes around six-hours more or less. I know that most of you I’ve seen post on this thread would love it if you could participate. They also have CityRace which are shorter (about three-hour) events that concentrate on specific neighborhoods.

What kind of neighborhoods? Here’s some of the upcoming CityRace’s:

Olvera Street, El Pueblo and Beyond
CityRace Disneyland
Secrets of Old Pasadena
LA Metro Art Adventure
Downtown L.A.: Center of the City of Angels
Santa Monica: From Pacific Park to the Promenade
Long Beach Oceanside Adventure
Culver City: In the Shadow of the Stars
West Hollywood: Santa Monica Blvd. and the Sunset Strip
The Great Chinatown Hunt
Secrets of Little Tokyo

I decided to mention it today because of this announcement:
Race/La/news

City of Los Angeles asks Race/LA to create new "Best of Broadway" CityRace

Race/LA has partnered with L.A. City Councilmember José Huizar's Bringing Back Broadway initiative to create a new CityRace Urban Adventure Hunt in Downtown LA.

Bringing Back Broadway is an ambitious 10-year plan led by Councilmember Huizar to revitalize the Historic Broadway corridor in downtown L.A. Goals are to provide economic development and business assistance; re-activate Broadway’s historic vacant theaters, as well as more than one million square feet of vacant commercial space and increase parking and transit options, including bringing the beloved streetcar back to downtown Los Angeles.

Bringing Back Broadway's half-way mark will be celebrated Saturday January 25, 2014 with "A Day On Broadway," featuring special events and activities, highlighted by our all-new CityRace: The Best of Broadway at 1:00 p.m., which will be created especially for this occasion.

In addition to the race, A Day On Broadway will include walking tours, discussons and historical presentations, showcasing the revitalization of the Historic Broadway Theatre District. In CityRace: The Best of Broadway, participants will set out on a clue-solving adventure exploring the district's historic structures and landmark theatres, along with some of the street's newest shops, galleries and restaurants.

Hope this is of interest to those who frequent this thread. Perhaps we could inspire them to do a Noirish L.A. Race! I don't think they've done one at night before!

I suspect she met with someone at Farmer's Market to connect her with Dr. "Scott" for an illegal abortion. Back-alley abortions are dangerous. Maybe something went wrong.

She certainly was attractive. Of course Hollywood is loaded with attractive women. This is a noir sad story.

The discarded purse? Might have been left at Griffith Park as a false lead, especially since it was found at the entrance.

Found this remarkable house while driving the Google-mobile around Boyle Heights:

http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/...psc8fe647b.jpgGSV

706 S. Chicago Street

Rare to find homes built of brick in LA. It's then hard to say if the arches on the porch and balcony are a nod to the more eastern Richardsonian Romanesque style, or the more western Mission Revival, which was emerging around the time this house was built (Zillow & all the other real estate sites say 1906). Either way, they're constructed of arroyo stones which, to me, give it a more distinctly Californian feel.
