Mike Lyman's 'Flight Deck' is no stranger to NLA; here are three slides we haven't seen.

I wrongly assumed the mammoth 'sculptures' at the La Brea Tar Pits were pretty much immobile and secured to the bottom of the tar pit.

Not true, this one started to float away!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/VsXfhw.jpg
http://www.tarpits.org/blog

"Rescuing the floating lake pit mammoth. It had drifted south from a broken anchor and ended up mired in sediment by the sidewalk bridge.
First, the 'wranglers' had to unstick the mammoth by pulling on it with a rope and nudging it with a pole. The mammoth was then dragged
to its normal area with the rope tied off to a stake to wait for its re-chaining."
-January 28, 2013

Installation of the mammoth sculpture in June of 1968.

I wasn't able to find out how deep the main tar pit 'lake' is. (still searching for an answer)
_

My former boss, a lawyer, had an office which faced Wilshire directly across the street from the Tar Pits. He drank in those days and was sitting in his office when a Mammoth flew by his window. Quite startled, and not having a drink that day, he thought he was seeing things, but it turned out that he was just watching the installation of the mammoths across the street.

Shriners in Los Angeles, 1950!!

Great photos, amazing. 1950 was an important date in LA Shriner history esp because Harold Lloyd was the Imperial Potentate of the Shrine, i.e., the Big Cheese (or Grand Poobah, if you will) of the entire American group.

First off, let me spell out what the Shrine is—a guy becomes a Master Mason, that is, gets his three degrees in what's known as his Blue Lodge, and then, he can spend his time there, helping conduct the Lodge's business, helping confer degrees, etc. Also, there are appendant bodies in Masonry; the Scottish Rite is generally considered the "College of Masonry," the York Rite the "Church of Masonry," and the Shrine the "Social Club of Masonry." But just because the Shrine has drinking and little cars (famously so) doesn't mean they're not an immensely serious and influential philanthropic organization.

Aaaaanyway, Lloyd became Potentate of the Al Malaikah Shrine in 1939 and was eventually raised to Imperial Potentate in the summer of '49.

Read all about it here.

It made the cover of Time:

Here he is at the Al Malaikah with fellow Nobles Roy Rogers, Red Skelton and Dick Powell:

It's seems that mystery locations from Julius Shulman are occurring more often these days. This one is "Job 4395: Calvin C. Straub, Crippled Children School (Pasadena, Calif.), 1968".

It's a shame I can't read the writing by the entrance in te picture above. This is the only other shot of the exterior.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

The interior is more spacious than I was expecting.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

I'll finish with the only color shot in the set.

Does anyone know if the school building is still standing?

It's the first time - I guess - that we see Olive Street THAT front from the sidewalk of the Biltmore.
Is the slope so much impressive today ? I don't know if this stretch has been graded.

:previous: Alvaro, I noticed how prominent the Olive St. hill looks too.

If you only looked at that small corner of the slide you'd think you were in San Francisco.

Oooh yeah, Olive ran up as a hill almost to the corner of Third; in the late-60s when they were regrading like crazy Olive's steepness was reduced from Fourth, and then flattens out about midway between Fourth and Third. Consider: Angels Flight used to run up to the top of the hill at Olive and Third. It's still the same track-length, now that it's been returned—and it has to run to the top of this purple skybridge, so, that's how high, therefore, the hill used to be:

The main charity work of the Shriners is their Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. They treat about 100,000 children per year.

Also, any child unable to pay gets the same care as any other.

They've been in that facility at 4th & Virgil since 1952. I don't think they're going to keep it after their giant, new $80million medical center on Fair Oaks opens next year.

Now, the problem here is that there's nothing noirish about it. In fact, it's just the opposite, a heart-warming tale of helping children!

Soooo, in the interests of maintaining a noir bent, a bit of vaguely Masonic-related murder:

Y'all are, I trust, familiar with the Scottish Rite Temple at 150 N Madison in Pasadena? Opened in 1925:

https://c5.staticflickr.com/1/502/31...40c2b598_b.jpgnewspapers.com

The architect was JJ Blick, best known for his Pasadena homes. He designs the SRT in a proto-Deco, "Monumental" style that evokes in its massing the Temple of Horus (Egyptian is a key stylistic impulse in Masonry, for reasons I won't go into here) but it's also a remarkable Modern building in its construction and design.

https://c8.staticflickr.com/1/409/30...e0af851f_b.jpgumass

Anyway, December of 1933, a ladies-man dentist (in the depths of the Depression, when a vast number of men were out-of-work, being a dentist could really nab you some dames) named Leonard Siever was shot down outside the SRT; the shooting became known as "The Sphinx Murder" in that it happened under the watchful, silent eye of the Sphinx. (The Sphinxes, btw, are not exactly a copy, but definitely a reference to those at the Scottish Rite's House of the Temple [John Russell Pope, 1915] in Washington D.C.)

https://c3.staticflickr.com/1/570/31...c4f650a9_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/742/31...2944dcd4_b.jpg

It became a media sensation, and to this day, remains a cold case.

Read all about it here. Also, I recommend a trip on Esotouric's Pasadena tour; it visits this site and so many more.

https://c8.staticflickr.com/1/71/307...3c5f2f6a_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/507/31...49bcb09e_o.png

Of course, Siever was murdered not in front of a sphinx, but in the parking lot alongside the building...not at the back, granted, where he'd parked, but nearer the street...closer, but not exactly in direct sphinx territory...

https://c2.staticflickr.com/1/345/31...bff40e96_b.jpgucla

...but who would let a simple fact like that get in the way of a good story?

(Speaking of stories, the depression was not kind on the Pasadena Scottish Rite, who were scheduled to lose this home to their creditors. A member by the name of Charles Cobb donated enough to save the Pasadena Scottish Rite, in a story that involves a magnificent house, haunted grounds, a cemetery battle, and the Marx Brothers. Google that!)

I couldn't even find it in a detailed list of Calvin Straub projects.

Quiz prize reduced to 2-martini lunch at The Palm :{

Yes, Martin Pal, the b/w photos were certainly taken several blocks east of the intersection of SMB and San Vicente.

So the question stands: what was the difference discernable between the 1933 and 1950 pictures? Hint: The point I was hoping people might notice has to do with the cars :)

And thanks e_r for the history of the lesbian bar, "The Palms." But the prize will be collected at The Palm (no "s") steakhouse, on SMB west of San Vicente. That's the one with the cartoons of famous customers on the wall:
http://i.imgur.com/5kFcKlO.jpg
http://www.latimes.com/food/dailydis...811-story.html

I ate there (luckily on someone else's dime, it was expensive) several times before it closed in 2014. It must have been discussed here before.

Coincidentally, the first 1933 picture shows the Fearless Camera Co (R G Fear, mgr) at 8572 Santa Monica Boulevard; this address was the same as the demolished lesbian bar. Could it have been the same building?
