It's a bit hard to tell, but I think the station was angled at the corner.


If so, perhaps the angle was omitted by adding to the front (where the decorative 'rocks' wall is)

Wilmington Pacific Electric Station, southwest corner of Avalon Blvd. and D Street.

There's an existing Rebel's Cockail Lounge at 2216 S Pacific Avenue in San Pedro.

During WWII there was some Coast Guard housing in Wilmington...wondering if anyone has any photos of it...

I like the original building facade [above]...very handsome and still would be welcome to the eyes.
The remodels are backroom amateurish...could have been more thoughtfully designed. They took a nice building and made it look rather unappealing.

The motto of my Design College days was ... "Its not what you add but what you leave out." Its was called 'good taste'. It seems as if good taste is a moribund idea today in 2016.

Look at most of Frank Lloyd Wright's work. They look just as fresh today as they did almost a 100 years ago.

Yes, agreed--the old version was beautifully dynamic, something to be proud of; the re-do is banal. The earlier owner/architect was brave; the later owner/architect was timid. Bah!

I also remembered this 1980 aerial from post #19874. I've added the arrow to mark the Wilmington station location. Trucker told us that the diagonal route was a Red Car right-of-way. That probably explains the missing buildings from Avalon Boulevard.

Although none of the aerial views show an empty lot where the station was, I don't think it's the same building.

I like the glimpse of the building to the left of this one, too.

Yeah I think you're probably right Hoss...but since aerials never show an empty lot there's a remote possibility....right? (emphasis on remote;))

While going through some old files of mine, I found this really cool photograph showing a two-tone red bus and a nifty neighborhood Mobilgas station.

The car parked in the RED zone means it probably has Diplomatic License plates. That means they cannot get a parking violation ticket...imo.

The photo is part of the Metro Library and Archive. Their description says "Marmon southbound on Long Beach Blvd. Lynwood, at Lynwood Road. Mobilgas station with flying red horse.". I found an address of 11471 Long Beach Boulevard for Vons. I think the shadow identifies the store on the 1972 aerial below, left. The area was considerably altered by the building of the Century Freeway (below, right). Lynwood Road now deadends next to the off-ramp.

I think you are making the assumption that the intersection is of Avalon and Avenue D. I think the picture is taken at the intersection of Avalon and the street car right of way which is mid-block between Avenues C and D.

Looking again, I think I agree with UphillDonkey - the station was on the corner of Avalon and the right-of-way, not D Street. That would explain why there were less buildings between the station and C Street than I could see on GSV. It would also explain the angled end of the station building. The view below is from 1952.

When I Googled "San Fernando Valley Veteran Hospital", the majority of the results were for this complex in Sylmar, but I can't see the buildings from the pictures above. Were the Shulman photos taken somewhere else?

I think it might be the Bekins building on Fries Avenue. Trucker did a then-and-now with the Wilmington Transfer and Storage Co (an earlier tennant of the building) in post #19855.
