Ever since our discussion of this photograph...

I've been wondering if this building is the old P.E. Station.

It's in the same spot and bears a passing resemblance.

It's a bit hard to tell, but I think the station was angled at the corner.

If so, perhaps the angle was omitted by adding to the front (where the decorative 'rocks' wall is)

And to go even further out on the limb, could the building next to it possess remnants of the Rebel's Cocktail building?

I could be way off the mark in both instances...but I thought I'd throw it out there and see what you noirisher thought.

search purposes:
Wilmington Pacific Electric Station, southwest corner of Avalon Blvd. and D Street.

Blaster Aug 27, 2016 11:09 PM

There's an existing Rebel's Cockail Lounge at 2216 S Pacific Avenue in San Pedro.

rbpjr Aug 28, 2016 1:40 AM

Wilmington area

During WWII there was some Coast Guard housing in Wilmington...wondering if anyone has any photos of it...

I wonder how much light this unusual design let through.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

I like the original building facade [above]...very handsome and still would be welcome to the eyes.
The remodels are backroom amateurish...could have been more thoughtfully designed. They took a nice building and made it look rather unappealing.

The motto of my Design College days was ... "Its not what you add but what you leave out." Its was called 'good taste'. It seems as if good taste is a moribund idea today in 2016.

Look at most of Frank Lloyd Wright's work. They look just as fresh today as they did almost a 100 years ago.

Yes, agreed--the old version was beautifully dynamic, something to be proud of; the re-do is banal. The earlier owner/architect was brave; the later owner/architect was timid. Bah!

I found a couple of better pictures of the station in Wilmington.

"A Pacific Electric tower car passes in front of the Wilmington Pacific Electric and Southern Pacific passenger and freight station."

This one is from a finished eBay auction.

I also remembered this 1980 aerial from post #19874. I've added the arrow to mark the Wilmington station location. Trucker told us that the diagonal route was a Red Car right-of-way. That probably explains the missing buildings from Avalon Boulevard.

Although none of the aerial views show an empty lot where the station was, I don't think it's the same building.

I like the glimpse of the building to the left of this one, too.

Wonder what flag that is flying from the top of the building now?

***

I found this:

The property at 130 S. El Camino Drive was built in 1951 and formerly housed the offices of entertainer and business mogul Merv Griffin, broker Joshua Meltzer of the real estate firm Studley Inc. said.

According to this:
http://articles.latimes.com/2013/may...-sold-20130515

And this explains what the flag is:

The building is now "The General Consulate of the State of Kuwait."

Looks like that tree, too, was destined to grow with a lean.

No parking, now, too, except there's a car there.

Yeah I think you're probably right Hoss...but since aerials never show an empty lot there's a remote possibility....right? (emphasis on remote;))

p.s.
Just to show how dedicated I am....

I checked the photos of Avalon Liquors on Yelp hoping to see an old photograph of the P.E. station hanging on the wall behind their counter!

'mystery' location

While going through some old files of mine, I found this really cool photograph showing a two-tone red bus and a nifty neighborhood Mobilgas station.

eBay?

Obviously the photograph was taken somewhere around the Compton area (says so on the bus:))

The car parked in the RED zone means it probably has Diplomatic License plates. That means they cannot get a parking violation ticket...imo.

The photo is part of the Metro Library and Archive. Their description says "Marmon southbound on Long Beach Blvd. Lynwood, at Lynwood Road. Mobilgas station with flying red horse.". I found an address of 11471 Long Beach Boulevard for Vons. I think the shadow identifies the store on the 1972 aerial below, left. The area was considerably altered by the building of the Century Freeway (below, right). Lynwood Road now deadends next to the off-ramp.

I think you are making the assumption that the intersection is of Avalon and Avenue D. I think the picture is taken at the intersection of Avalon and the street car right of way which is mid-block between Avenues C and D.

ethereal_reality Aug 28, 2016 7:39 PM

:previous: I'm pretty sure I have the right intersection UphillDonkey...Avalon and D Street. (southwest corner)

I see:

#1 Syke's Insurance

#2 Dooley? (it actually looks more like 'Cootewy';), but I really doubt if that's correct. lol) I believe that's the Sherwin-Williams Paint logo* atop the sign, so it could be a hardware store.

#3 Amber's (on the blade sign and painted on the side of the building) do you think this is a cocktail lounge?

#4 Von's, of course.

oops, I see my typo now. I meant C street...Avalon Liquor Store is at Avalon & C street. -sorry for the confusion.

Looking again, I think I agree with UphillDonkey - the station was on the corner of Avalon and the right-of-way, not D Street. That would explain why there were less buildings between the station and C Street than I could see on GSV. It would also explain the angled end of the station building. The view below is from 1952.

There sure is Blaster.

Just look at this place noirishers!

At first I thought the old signage above the door might be from the old Rebel's next to the Wilmington P.E. station.

This is Julius Shulman's "Job 1960: San Fernando Valley Veteran Hospital (San Fernando Valley, Calif.), 1955".

When I Googled "San Fernando Valley Veteran Hospital", the majority of the results were for this complex in Sylmar, but I can't see the buildings from the pictures above. Were the Shulman photos taken somewhere else?

Here's a different angle. The remaining buildings were demolished soon afterwards, and the area is now a park.

My apologies UphillDonkey. I just took for granted the station was on a street corner. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction.

So the station was somewhere along here, right?

I think it might be the Bekins building on Fries Avenue. Trucker did a then-and-now with the Wilmington Transfer and Storage Co (an earlier tennant of the building) in post #19855.

Hoss, might Shulman have photographed the former Sepulveda VA Hospital in North Hills? It was a victim of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.
