I've just checked the building records and found this one for 3969 Wilshire Boulevard from 1922. It's page 2 that's interesting. It recommends that Gladys V Smith should be allowed to build six garages at the rear of her apartment house on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Gramercy Place. Could her apartment house be our mystery building. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original Online Building Records |

Great images, Hoss--I was forgetting that the building was gone well before 1948--it was replaced in the latter half of 1935. Still wondering when it was built and why it seems to have been so short-lived -- EDIT: just dug these up: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/LX...366-h768-rw-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Xh...366-h768-rw-nohttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/n4...366-h768-rw-no It was demolished in 1986. Gladys V. Smith invested in quite a few properties in the area-- |

Bristolian, B.O.A.C. is also found in the lyrics to Bobby Brown's 'Montego Bay', but many mistakenly believe the word is 'BOAT'. wrong (red arrow) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/mHYby7.jpg https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...0bobby%20bloom It should be... "Vernon'll meet me when the B.O.A.C. lands" Listen to it yourself. Mr. Brown was primarily known as a songwriter. 'Montego Bay' was his one hit as a singer. Sadly, Bobby Bloom died of a gunshot wound at the young age of 28. No one knows if it was suicide, accident or murder. According to wikipedia and many many other sites, he "was killed on February 28, 1974 in an accidental shooting after suffering from depression." In response: "Does that mean he accidentally shot himself? How? Or did somebody else shoot him? I can't find anything else about the incident -- does anybody know more about it? Janet Land at Media Arts Someone else wrote this: "He died of a gunshot wound. Somebody shot him, in a fight over a girl. It was crazy! He kicked down a door, and ran into the room, and the guy reached for a gun. I don’t think they ever found the guy." cillit_bang And finally this... Bobby Bloom, who sang the 1970 hit “Montego Bay,” died in 1974 at age 28 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. -sanko All from http://ask.metafilter.com/42514/How-...obby-Bloom-die |

Strangely, the other version of Montego Bay that I have by Freddie Notes & The Rudies uses the lyric "Vernon'll meet me when the Boeing lands". It was also released in 1970. |
e_r: For what it's worth, here's the Los Angeles Times write-up on Bloom, March 1, 1974:
SONG WRITER FOUND SHOT TO DEATH[.] Song writer-performer Robert Martin (Bobby) Bloom, who composed the hit “Montego Bay,” was shot to death in the West Hollywood home of a former girlfriend, sheriff’s detectives reported. Officers said Bloom, 28, may have killed himself. Bloom’s roommate, Ronald Wayne Norton, told officers he and Bloom were visiting Linda Marie Karakehian at 807 N. Sweetzer Ave. when Bloom went into a bedroom and a shot was heard a short time later. |

and B.O.A.C. makes sense because Jamaica is part of "British West Indies" (it would be a major carrier) ....and in the same stanza he mentions "adjust to the driving" & "it's all on the 'right side'. ____ Hmmmm, shouldn't he have said "it's all on the left side"? then again, there would be no need to "adjust" if he was flying in from the U.K (hmmm...maybe he was flying in from Miami) I just confused myself. (not a hard thing to do;)) Help! |

The building [left] in the background is the old Ferry Building which is now the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. If you read between the lines, they are advertising a tour of Asian prostitutes in three countries, with a few train rides and statues thrown in to make it seem legit. They might as well have said "If you don't get laid, it's your own damn fault". If a corporation ran this ad today, there would be hell to pay. 'mystery' location #1: Looking east across elevated tracks behind PE's 6th & Main Sts. Terminal.
'mystery' location #2: Looking NNE at PE's Watts depot (E. 103rd St. & Graham Ave.), still stands. 'mystery' location #3 (with ghost): Looking SE at PE's Watts Substation. After staring and squinting a lot, suspect that "ghost lady" is a backyard incinerator or similar concrete object. Magnification of the image quickly results in pixelation, but I can't make a convincing face on the "ghost". Also, the gentleman in the photo is looking northward up the tracks, not at "her". And it's not Halloween. :) |

Thalberg reference :previous: precipitated a directory search. The '21 and '22 CD lists Thalberg, who was then Universal's General Manager, residing at 3677 Wilshire Blvd. (GW's Wilshire blog discusses the address: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...e-see-our.html) (By '23, Thalberg's residence was listed as 446 S. Norton and by '25, at 689 S. Bronson.) The Ambassador's construction and opening around the same time (1921) must have irrevocably impacted the area 's traffic and diminished the so-called residential quality of the neighborhood. Of course, as busy as Thalberg was, he may have barely spent any time at the address. Several sources have him residing at the Ambassador too. 1921 Ambassador https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Hotel_1921.jpghttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Hotel_1921.jpg Undated photo of general neighborhood. http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics19/00009264.jpghttp://jpg1.lapl.org/pics19/00009264.jpg |
Today's Julius Shulman post is one of my rare excursions into private homes. I thought it was worth it for another Lloyd Wright design. This is "Job 4812: Lombardi (John) House (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), 1971".
