Built in 1905, it had forty rooms for rent and two stores. It begins to be listed in the CDs as the Havlin Hotel from 1927 - the name it kept until demolition in 1965. It was one building up from the tunnel. Between it and the tunnel was another four story rooming place, the Crown Hotel.

Of course nothing from that image survives except the tunnel. Every building as well the entire hillside, gone. Even the tunnel entrance has moved about a third of a block to the west. 704 W 3rd st. would actually be inside the tunnel now. That horse would have been standing approximately at this spot. Google has it as 703 W 3rd st.

Did Grace recover from her self surgery? Of course the recovery would have been temporary, since this was 1909 after all and she was 20, so she'd be about 130 today if she pulled through. But it would be nice to know if she made it to 1970, say, and saw man walk on the Moon. The most likely "complication" (besides hemmorage) would be infection leading to septicemia, which was usually fatal in the days before antibiotics. Just the same, hope Grace had a long life.

I was feeling the same way about Grace!

Good find! Grace Ulrich seems a rare name, so it possibly (maybe probably) is "our" Grace in the 1909 story. In 1939 she would have been about 50 (she was 20 in 1909). If this Grace in 1939 was 50, then it is almost certain she is the 1909 Grace. Unfortunately the 1939 article doesn't give her age. Apparently the 1939 Grace worked (or volunteered) for either the VA or the Red Cross. Another clue. But I would say it's probable (because of the unusual name) we are dealing with the same woman. Thanks--you made my day.

I couldn't help but notice that Grace remained single. I wonder if it had anything to do with her traumatic experience at age 20.
