Built in 1905, it had forty rooms for rent and two stores. It begins to be listed in the CDs as the Havlin Hotel from 1927 - the name it kept until demolition in 1965. It was one building up from the tunnel. Between it and the tunnel was another four story rooming place, the Crown Hotel. You can see them side by side right by the tunnel on the 1921 Baist map. https://i.imgur.com/P570LIm.jpg digitallibrary.usc.edu Here's another view ( ca.1937) of the location with a side view of the Havlin Hotel's upper stories on the right. The photographer for your picture must have been situated on the opposite footpath corner. https://i.imgur.com/QEOiRfu.jpg digitallibrary.usc.edu |
We've seen the Havlin before, in an eBay auction that I won back in 2010, hence this combo:

While looking for additional information on the Havlin Hotel I happened upon this directory that includes the names in Japanese and Chinese. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/5WWY0j.jpg https://books.google.com/books?id=Fw...page&q&f=false I have never seen this type of directory before. page #402 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...921/MZhb2S.jpg FRONT COVER https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/erw3EW.jpg NEW WORLD YEAR BOOK Do you think it's a directory for INTERNATIONAL SPIES? ...............;) |

Even the tunnel entrance has moved about a third of a block to the west. 704 W 3rd st. would actually be inside the tunnel now. That horse would have been standing approximately at this spot. Google has it as 703 W 3rd st. |
I forgot the telephone prefixes.

I couldn't help but notice that Grace remained single. I wonder if it had anything to do with her traumatic experience at age 20.

FOUR 'mystery' locations
1970s slides taken by the City Planning Office. Nice VW. #2 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/Dcvr3t.jpg EBAY clink link, then scroll down. Is that pig holding a giant ear of corn...or is he just glad to see me? ...:naughty:...*groucho* #3 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Slkvqx.jpg EBAY clink link, then scroll down. For me, this slide is the most intriguing. (followed by #3) I hope one of you can read the street sign. (I can't) #4 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/zd8pLR.jpg EBAY clink link, then scroll down. I'm pretty sure the street sign says State St., but I'm not so sure about the cross street. (3rd or 9th ) I like that burgandy Monte Carlo. It is a Monte Carlo, right? info. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/6ivqaQ.jpg EBAY clink link, then scroll down.
