Overlooked New York
ONE WALL STREET 1928 - 1932 Art-Deco - 52nd Tallest Building in the City. (Description from Wikipedia) One Wall Street (originally the Irving Trust Company Building, later the Bank of New York Building) was completed in 1931 and opened in 1932. The original architect was the firm of Voorhees, Gmelin & Walker. It is 50 stories and is 654 feet (199 m) tall. The building measures 1,165,659 rentable square feet. It is located in the Financial District of Manhattan and is on the corner of Wall Street and Broadway. It is known for its spectacular mosaic lobby[1] In 1965, a 36-floor addition to the site was constructed to the south of the tower to provide extra office space. The building has a steel skeleton, and is covered in limestone.[2] The building has had numerous problems with the limestone exterior and in 2001, the building's owners decided to bring in Hoffman Architects to conduct a survey of the exterior and provide a 5 year masterplan which consists of mortar repair and window replacements. http://www.wickedtallbuildings.com/IrvingTrust-1.GIF http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/PICT0001.jpg http://www.wickedtallbuildings.com/IrvingTrust-2.GIF http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/srivals8.gif http://ci.columbia.edu/0240s/images/...2_3_102213.jpg http://www.nyu.edu/classes/finearts/...age/irving.JPG http://www.nyu.edu/classes/finearts/..._entrance2.JPG http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/PICT0003.jpg http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/srivals5.gif http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/PICT0013a.jpg http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/051C.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...all_Street.jpg http://ci.columbia.edu/0240s/images/...2_3_102994.jpg http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/051-irving.jpg http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/LM051G2.jpg |
I think it's the most elegant of the big four prewar buildings in the financial district.
I didn't know about the cladding problem. |
It is, quite simply, one the most beautiful skyscrapers ever built. Thank for posting the information and photos.

I like it

I especially like the entranceway and the setbacks at the very top. |
A few years ago, I read somewhere that it was described as having a feminine look (on the outside, I was guessing). Sometime afterwards, I take a walk through d'town, look at it in that light, and realize that it does have a "lady-like" look to it compared to surrounding bldgs.
Looking at it on a sunny day kind of gives me the impression that, if Heaven has skyscrapers, that's what they would look like! |

Looks like it certainly aged gracefully.

One Wall Street Set For CetraRuddy-Designed Residential And Hotel Conversion And Expansion Article Here |
Interesting. I had thought that the 1960's-era annex was going to be demolished and a new tower built in its place, but it looks like they're redeveloping the existing building and adding floors.
The rumor is that the base of the redevelopment will have a huge retail space, and they're in negotiations with a luxury department store. |
