^Oh my gosh. That's both funny and scary.

:previous: That last photo makes me understand for the first time how Lone Mountain got its name. It never has seemed to me much of a mountain (it's pretty much the site of the University of San Francisco, a private Jesuit college, now) nor particularly "alone". But you can see what the folks who named it were seeing in the photo.

I love San Franciscos history so here are some more pictures and an amazing video from 1905 and then the 40s.

Amazing shots, guys. Thanks for finding and posting them!
FYI: that statue photo was taken down at Stanford. While more rare, there are photos from all over the area showing the effects of that quake. I recall one of a fence up my way that shifted several feet that day. Of course the SF pix are most dramatic, but the damage was visible for miles around. |
Here's a cool shot from Flickr user kuzmacom:

The most beautiful city in the United States; possibly in the world.

Wow, Market Street almost looks more alive back then than it does today with all those signs and lights.

I like the shot of a two-way Geary. Except for the cars (ok, and a little bit of neon), it doesn't look all that different today.

Cool aerial of the Sunset:

I have never particularly liked the 'modern' Powell St. cable car turnaround configuration, which is probably why I'm always intrigued by its older configuration.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/60184884@N03/5497268134/ I couldn't directly link the photo above. Nevertheless, another photo of the former turnaround: http://farm1.staticflickr.com/63/199...433_z.jpg?zz=1 http://www.flickr.com/photos/olivand...91876/sizes/z/ http://www.munidiaries.com/muni-time...ar-turnaround/ |

The pictures of the 1906 Fire and Earthquake reminded me, Monday is the 106th anniversary of the earthquake.
