The Titan Arum Blooms: Alberta Election on May 5th

Today's the day.

Alberta Votes 2015: Jim Prentice expected to call election today

Premier to make 'major announcement' at 10:30 a.m

Quote:

Last week, Premier Jim Prentice was asked once again what reporters have been asking for months: When would Albertans go to the polls?

"Well, I think we should all enjoy the Easter weekend," he quipped.

The months of speculation should finally end today, when Prentice is scheduled to appear at 10:30 a.m. MT at the Crestwood Community Hall in Edmonton to make a "major announcement," expected to be the long-awaited election call.

A standard 28-day campaign would send Albertans to the polls as early as May 5.

Even if he did that does not automatically register you to vote, and I think that is at the federal level only anyhow.

Chadillaccc Apr 9, 2015 2:42 AM

Thanks guys! This will be my first time voting! :)

It does, but in a roundabout way that wouldn't be fast enough for this spring's voters list. Unless the federal government is much better at maintaining the voters list than they used to be.

2015 Alberta Election

Just thought that this would be of interest of all of Canada since Alberta is currently in a Provincial election and there appears to be huge cracks in the conservatives armor. If there is a change in the Provincial Government in Alberta, I believe it may have ramifications on the Federal scene as well hence why I thought to start the thread in the Canada section.

308 notes the most recent polls have the NDP and the PC in a dead heat with the WR in front.
http://www.threehundredeight.com

It appears from their polling that 42% of Edmonton decided voters are voting NDP provincially, which would give them most of the seats in the Capital. If they are able to grow this base and there are vote splits on the right they may get more seats in other parts of the province.

The WR looks like it is back to where it was. Looks like the plans for many of the MLA's to leave and join the PC's may look bad.

Interesting times for Canada's longest ever political party in power.

The most we can hope for is a PC minority. Even that would be an improvement though.

I was all excited for the Alberta Erection, dyslexia failing me again.:notacrook:

If Prentice had proposed a provincial sales tax in his budget, I could see a need to go to the voters for a fresh mandate. Failing that, the timing just looks like opportunism. If I were an Alberta voter, I'd be cheesed off about it, but I don't know that it would affect my voting intention at the end of the day.

Boris2k7 Apr 9, 2015 6:16 PM

Regardless of the polling numbers for the Wildrose, they are incapable of forming government because their geographic base isn't wide enough. You can get 30% of the popular vote, but if that's all concentrated in southern Alberta you don't have a hope of forming government.

The only hope I have for this election is that the NDP will eat the Liberals' lunch and pick up seats in Calgary.

Agree 1000% with this.

It is criminal that the Liberal Party can't get their shit together. There completely irrelevant. Wildrose and NDP are a nonstarter, Alberta Party is even more irrelevant than the Liberals.

Hopefully Edmonton doesn't get stupid and go NDP....we've seen what happens when Edmonton isn't represented by the ruling party.

....and that is why the PC's will keep winning.

That is the problem we as Albertans have had. We could never vote for the Wild Rose due to stances on social issues. No to the NDP due to positions on economics. That leaves the Liberals as the only other party left (Alberta Party is a fringe party that does not have candidates in about half the ridings). The Alberta Liberals unfortunately for them do not know what they stand for and are all over the place. Case in point, one of their best known MLA's is my own MLA as I live in Edmonton centre. The party office is a few blocks to the west and our MLA has 2 offices in our riding, one at the Legislature grounds and the constituency office. Guess what, in 9 years I have lived in my place, I have yet to see anything platform or even mentioning what they would do or what they stand for. If you cant get to me and I live a stones throw from the Legislature who can you reach. Then apparently my MLA who is a Liberal Party MLA also has the nomination for the seat for 2 other parties as well.

Rachel Notley strikes me more as a small-"l" liberal than a doctrinaire socialist. In most of the country the Liberals and NDP come out of different political traditions but given their weakness in Alberta and the little ideological difference between them it makes sense for them to merge. The Liberals don't seem to have their act together, and the NDP seems to be in a good position to become the center-left party.

Unless it is a federal election, election threads stay in their respective subforums. The ontario election last summer was in the Ontario section, no reason this one shouldn't be.

ciudad_del_norte Apr 9, 2015 9:00 PM

Yeah, I think the fear of the NDP is a knee jerk reaction more than anything. Will be interesting to see if they actually are as successfull in Edmonton as currently polls show.

As for Edmonton centre, I actually think Laurie Blakeman does quite well as an MLA. In fact, she is probably the only thing the provincial liberals really have going for them at this point. In terms of visible and active MLAs, Blakeman and Notley definitely stand out in Edmonton.

I agree with the earlier statement about the wildrose having geographical limits, I just can't see them being that successful in many places north of Calgary.

The Alberta party has potential, but they are having trouble being seen as a viable option when they still haven't managed to elect any MLA s yet.
