Sears Canada reportedly bound for liquidation

Sears just announced it's closing its Cornwall location. I feel for the people who work there, but the writing has been on the wall for a while.

Tyler19944 Jun 22, 2017 3:40 PM

I am crossing my fingers for a full interior and exterior renovation of the Sears section of the Cornwall.

sastaunik44 Jun 22, 2017 4:04 PM

SO Sears downtown is closing, yet they have the Sears home up for lease. Is that one closing as well?

Yeah, it had the Cornwall location on the list, but not the Sears Home store on Quance. Their bread and butter is appliances really, so I wonder if they'll keep that location to continue appliance sales in the market. It would have MUCH lower rent costs than the Cornwall location.

Or has the Home Store been previously announced as closing?

CoryB Jun 22, 2017 6:53 PM

I would need to crunch full lists but it seems the Sears Home brand is being close to completely removed. Leaving one store behind wouldn't make sense.

Interesting. In Saskatoon, Sears closed their Home store a while ago, but their department store in Midtown Plaza isn't getting closed with the rest of them in the province.

Sears seems to hope they can save the company and is hoping the restructure will make them viable. I doubt it. I think they are just delaying the whole chain going under.

It only makes sense as a point to deal with warranty-related issues

Reno to facade of east side of Shoppes on Hamilton is almost complete.

Construction is continuing on the interiors of the new stores on the E side.

That picture is definitely the east side of Hamilton so I was also confused by his post.

Nathan Jun 27, 2017 2:59 AM

It makes sense to me?... West is basically complete, no pictures necessary, East has some finishing touches on some spaces left.

Seems more likely Sears is dumping debt and some of their worst locations with an eye to being a more attractive take over target in a few months. It almost seems like a deal might already be in the works sort of like how Amazon and Whole Foods spent about a year flirting with each other before going official.

Any guesses on who would even be looking at Sears?

There has really only been one entrant to Canada of that size: Nordstrom.

I'd say it's very unlikely they'll be doing a mass expansion and Regina is unlikely.

What about Simons, at least for a portion of the space?
