It's a "climb shot" so it must be somewhere west of Alameda. Can anybody place it using the taller buildings in the background as a clue. It ain't Ferguson that's for sure but I'd like place it and maybe indications of it an areal or some kind of overhead shot if possible.

We see this alley starting west from the middle of that section (with the railroad) which cuts the block between Los Angeles and Alameda. Post #12 663 page 634. Sorry, I'm unable to carry that photo to the current page.

The seller dates this slide at May 12, 1960. A quick check of the CDs tells us that Johnny Williamson's Williamson Motors was at 3153 W Pico Boulevard. The 1956 CD also lists a Williamson Motors gas station at 3131 W Pico, but that's gone by 1960. The 1960 CD does, however, list another branch of Williamson Motors at 1315 S La Brea Avenue. By 1961, the branch at 3153 W Pico has moved to 3131 W Pico (the old gas station address), and been replaced by Chieftain Pontiac at 3153 W Pico. The branch on S La Brea has also gone, but a new one at 4661 W Slauson has appeared. I haven't checked every CD in between, but the last mention of Williamson Motors is at the W Slauson address in the 1969 CD.

Back to the picture - is that a brand new Plymouth Valiant on the left?

The building survives (with additions), as do the palm trees on S Manhattan Place.

Just before I posted these images, I searched the thread and found that GaylordWilshire had posted a couple of nice pictures of Williamson Motors at 3153, and 3131 W Pico in post #11893. He also mentions the move to W Slauson.

The Plaza Market was at 4121 City Terrace Drive. Turn 90 degrees to the left and you'd be looking at the streamline Barbanell's drug store we found in post #25554. The building on the left is still recognizable.

In popular culture we know it as "The Strip" and "Sunset Strip" but was the name "Sunset Strip" ever officially adopted on street signage? In other words, did any municipality or county actually accept the name and put it on street signs?

ER, this as a Southern Pacific concrete telephone booth. Southern Pacific controlled the Pacific Electric until it sold the last of the passenger rail services to Metropolitan Coach Lines.

Valley Junction was where the PE's Northern District routes to Pasadena and San Bernardino diverged. With the end of passenger service on the Northern District, PE and later Southern Pacific continued to operate freight service to San Bernardino, Riverside and Redlands. Hence the survival of the SP Booth. Oh, and perhaps it's weight!!!

Here is a front view of one preserved at the Oceano railroad Station and Museum. Note my version of your Avatar!

The Music Hall record store, under the Fanny billboard, is where I bought Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix when it first came out. Also, later on that may have been the first location of Tower Records on The Strip.

Catercorner from the Music Hall is the Whisky A GoGo. Memories.........

Doesn't have quite the same turn in the street as the original but GSV does funny things with perspective, also, I should have screengrabbed about 75' further down the road, now that I compare the two.

And those bulbous whatnots—I look forward to their explanation! I may make an expedition out there tomorrow to what if anything is left of their existence.

Good sleuthing, HossC. But that, along with the photo itself also brings up a bit of a mystery.

The destination sign reads 3 W. Sixth - Central Only. This was the route of the LARY/LATL/LAMTA No. 3 Line. This line was 9 miles long until extended to 3rd and Fairfax for a total length of 12.1 miles. The location in the photo however, is on the No. 2 Line - City Terrace-Hooper Avenue. This line was 10 miles long.
Also, a friend has pointed out some other interesting things in the photo. While under the wire, the trolley poles on the bus are down and locked and it looks as though someone at the rear of the bus is attempting to push it! This is all very strange!

Cheers,
Jack

In a post earlier I mentioned Knott's Berry Farm. Just outside the Park there's the famous Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant.

Here's the meal. It always includes Soup, salad, cabbage, smashed potatoes/gravy, corn, biscuits n' butter, and a big piece of pie. $17.00 [in 1969 it was $2.25 cents.]
They've served millions and millions of dinners and currently gets very good reviews..

They may have had a branch office in Pasadena, I guess. The Forve-Pettibone Co. was located at 510-514 S. Broadway (building is still there). In any event, the Examiner (in 1910) was at 509-511 S. Thanks, AlvaroLegido! I see it as being just a little before where the tracks intersect Alameda, (upper left quadrant) the next alley south of Ferguson (extreme photo top leftish) leading to what remains of Calle de Los Negros. It seems that only the northern side of the alley's building remains in that photo. Well done!

It's difficult to tell. I got the 1943 date for 1260 W 2nd from honestbuildings.com. Their listing for 1262 W 2nd (the building highlighted by CBD) gives a build date of 1921, which means it must have existed when the USC picture was taken. That ties in with the Advance Electric Company's first listing in the 1923 CD, even though that's at 1260 W 2nd and nothing is listed at 1262 in the 1932 or 1936 CDs (the next two after the photo was taken). The 1932 CD shows a radio set supplier named F W Falk [sic] at 1260 W 2nd, and an animal hospital run by Walter L Curtis at 1264 W 2nd, which I'm assuming is the house on the right of the USC picture. By 1936, Fritz and Fred Falck's surname is spelled correctly again.

Moving on to the LA Adding Machine Company, here are the companies that appear at 1260 W 2nd Street in the 1960 CD (only the first three are in the 1956 CD). I can't see any listings for 1262 or 1264 W 2nd.

I hope this extra information can help someone decide whether the original Advance Electric Co building survives behind the current 1262 W 2nd Street frontage. After taking the Googlemobile up Emerald Street to view the roofs, I'd say it's possible, but I'm not 100% sure.

BTW, I think the house on the hill in the background of the USC pictures is the same one that appears at the top of the hill in old shots of the Belmont Tunnel, like this one posted by FredH in his Belmont Tunnel...Through the Years post.
