Looking at this, it appears the parade ground doesn't line up correctly with the B&W postcard image.

So perhaps the photographer wasn't located at the 'Gaffey Bulge' after all, but further north on Gaffey Street.



I believe these are the 'outlines' oldstuff is talking about. She has a good eye.

If I'm right, that means the building in the b/w photo below the unfilled red arrow might be around Beacon and 9th,
give or take a block or two.

Here is part of the 1921 Baist map which seems to show that the dead-end spur was virtually removed. The size of the plots on the 1910 map (above) makes me think that they were residential, whereas in 1921 the spur appears to end between two larger buildings, possibly factories or warehouses.

There are three Baist maps available at historicmapworks.com:1910, 1914 and 1921. I originally posted yesterday's map as 1921 because that's the one I look at most. It's actually from 1910, as amended in my post.

It's time for another Julius Shulman guessing game. Can you work out who this duo are? The pictures date from 1948. I bet GW knows as he's identified them before.

Did you guess? This is "Job 169: Wurdeman & Becket portraits, 1948". Welton Becket is the one on the left, with Walter Wurdeman on the right. You can see them in their offices in the middle of post #33869.

PE Streetcar Location.
 

ER, this car is leaving the Watts Car House at 103rd street for a run to 6th & Main streets station in Downtown LA. The buildings in the background are those of Markham Middle School on the Grandee Avenue side. The school is now heavily fenced off but the building are still in their original brick.

I took these photos of a survivor Wig-Wag signal in Gardena. It's on Denker Avenue just south of 166th st. The rail line still serves Crenshaw Lumber on the west side of Western Ave and I believe it was once part of the Pacific Electric system.

Her nearest neighbor was western author Zane Grey. His house is now the Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel. In 1925, Mrs. Wrigley built a chimes tower on the edge of Grey's property to loudly chime the hour every fifteen minutes. The tower was supposed to be a gift to the people of Avalon but the story goes that Mrs. Wrigley actually built it to annoy Grey.

Following on from yesterday's Wurdeman & Becket portraits, here are three Julius Shulman photos of one of their designs. This is "Job 488: Wurdeman & Becket, Ohrbach's Offices, 1949". No location is given, but I'm guessing somewhere in LA. Including a duplicate, I've left out four pictures from this set.

The only 'Duby' listed in the 1929 Los Angeles Directory is a Lawrence K. Duby (probably the boy's father) at 822 S. Orange drive.

Then I thought to myself, "hmmmmm...maybe there are some interior photographs online."






Sure enough, I found the old 'Duby' house in a real estate listing.....and yes, there were 63 photographs! (some were duplicates)

After going through the photos, I decided this was probably the boy's bedroom that contained the deadly arsenal all those years ago in August 1929.
