How did you know?! I have an esnipe bid in—I love all the pix of course but this one (which is a little later than 1918-20, probably about 1922, judging by the progress on the tunnel) especially moved me to bid on the lot. Of course I'll scan and share with the group so as to answer all the mysterious questions about Clio, hood-straddling, etc. I won the recently-discussed shots of Fourth and Olive, btw! And for peanuts! (Though there were a gaggle of nice neony LA slides I was recently outbid on, alas.)

I also purchased that $29 1949 Broadway tunnel negative. I have a lot to say on the subject of reproducing eBay images here, on cleaning them up, how sellers and collectors might feel...but that will have to wait for another time. I need to run and get my hair cut and pack—Avalon Ball weekend begins tomorrow!

It's nice to put names to familiar though blurry faces. :) I think this is Claire and Clio - the Heller sisters.

Here in their early twenties living with mum and dad, Charles and Cecelia, at 741 W. 11th Street in 1930. They were living there when the pictures were taken.

I don't know about you, but I don't believe I'd send my little girl down into a giant excavation pit.

When I first saw the photographs I wondered if her father worked for the excavation company. (Noir Noir's research says Clio's father was a dentist)

Since this photo looks west from Figueroa and Orange (now Wilshire) on January 23, 1920, I wonder if the house being moved
is the old Samuel Foy home, on its way from 651 S. Figueroa to 625 Witmer? The permit to move the Foy house (in two sections)
is dated eight days before the photo was taken.

I'm pretty sure we're looking east. That bag company building beyond the Brew 102 complex, I think I recall seeing it back in the old days when I would be departing east (homewards) from downtown on the Santa Ana Freeway. It could be that NLA has had a view like this long ago (I still consider myself a newbie). Someday some lunatic incredibly talented person who has a lot of time will make an index to NLA which would assist with this sort of situation!

Isn't the Brew 102 area where the old Aliso tree that pre-dated the founding of L.A. was located?
