A little more Mimi... Where all the trophies came from--don't know if Mimi bagged any herself, but she was along for the ride (not sure where the sport is in shooting a huge animal on the ground with a high-powered rifle--how much skill could it take in comparison to duck, quail grouse etc etc) https://s5.postimg.cc/bqsnhbdfb/boomhuntcompl.bmp.jpg LAT March 6, 1930 https://s5.postimg.cc/4nks1p09z/boom_BP.bmp.jpg Was curious about J. A teensy bit more about that MILK corner building: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=37353 |
I don't believe we have seen this John Humble photograph on nla.
Indiana Street at Brooklyn Avenue / East Los Angeles Jine 26, 1987. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/hcnPoy.jpg John Humble The Marlboro sign is still there (covered up), as well as the building with Fidel painted on it. (and the house directly behind it) I tried to match the Humble photo https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Pm9bAv.jpg GSV Fidel / Marlboro Sign / Old House (slow day in the ethereal household) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/1cFSIq.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/150bgQ.jpg GSV You can check out the corner yourself HERE If you swivel your head around you'll see this monument (directly behind John Humble when he took his photograph back in 1987) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/ct51df.jpg gsv We have talked about this thing at length but for the life of me I can't remember what it's memorializing. I SHOULDN'T HAVE CALLED IT A 'THING' ...but you have to admit it's a bit ugly. _ |

Additionally, Los Cinco Puntos/Five Points Memorial contains two plots honoring Mexican American veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Together, these two memorials—Morin Square Memorial and War Memorial—pay tribute to the strong presence of the veteran community in the Eastside.BTW, e_r, did you notice that there's still a taco truck on Indiana, only a few yards from the one in your 1987 Humble photo. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...coIndiana1.jpg GSV |

As this preview relates, Archibald Gillespie has a lot to answer for. His actions led to the battle of San Pasqual: "In this state of affairs, with the country completely disrupted, the means of communication cut off by the enemy (the American forces), the ports occupied by warships, etc.—such being the times, I stayed in Los Angeles and chose a wife. I got married, and after a couple of months became seriously ill with fever. During my convalescence, one night a squadron came whose arms I could hear clinking from one of the rooms. They knocked on the door. My wife opened it and two American officers asked for me. My wife was scared and said that I wasn’t there. On hearing this, he said not to deny it. I got out of bed and went to meet these men. I invited them in, and they very carefully explained to me the order to arrest me that they had received from military commander Gillespie. After having obtained permission from the officers, I changed my clothes. I left with them after they had searched my home. We went to Gillespie, who asked me questions about Ramon Carrillo, whom I had helped escape. I replied that I had not seen Carrillo since I had separated from Don Jose Castro. His response was for me to be thrown into the calaboose from which I would not be released until I informed them of Ramon Carrillo’s whereabouts. The officers shoved me out and took me to a lockup adjoining headquarters. They removed a drunk Indian to put me there. They took a blanket off the Indian and threw it over me so that I could cover myself with it; later on, they brought me a wooden table. They had me there a number of days (about thirty), despite the efforts of leading townsmen; but the officers who had arrested me pleaded with Gillespie and managed to get me out under their bond; and then, after removing my shackles, allowed me to stay in their quarters" -iUniverse |

Los Angeles and its environs are the site of so much in this book. It used to surprise me how involved L.A. usually was in old California happenings: So many events came to a head in or around greater L.A. Our fascinating focus here at NLA is on metropolis L.A., not pueblo L.A.! But I think the spirits of pueblo L.A. stand fast and still exert their subtle influence on those who followed; and we profit much by getting to know these pueblo spirits and their context a little better . . . |
Have we seen these two images on NLA?
