Nanaimo's incredible skyscrapers
Okay maybe they're not really incredible. And okay, maybe they're not really even skyscrapers but still, for a city Nanaimo's size (less than 100,000 people), it has a few reasonably tall buildings.
Nanaimo's tallest for a long time was this 17 story apartment building: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3570/...d81d5943b6.jpg Nanaimo's tallest hotel, the 14 story Coast Bastion fittingly, next to the 156 year old Bastion: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2210/...593a0c.jpg?v=0 Another angle of the city's tallest hotel: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3400/...8ac3ff.jpg?v=0 Nanaimo's new kid on the block, the nearly-finished 22 story Pacifica: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3299/...d57218.jpg?v=0 The 26 story Beacon is not only Nanaimo's tallest but also the tallest building on Vancouver Island: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2100/...6645c1.jpg?v=0 A view of the skyline from the north: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2394/...3ae920.jpg?v=0 |
the pacifica looks very similar to kelowna's lofts downtown.

I always have a good time in Nanaimo.

thanks for the tour Phil. there'll be another 24 storey condo tower on the waterfront in a few years, as long as the market holds up ha ha. here's the construction site - http://palladian.mdu.ca/

found some more photos here - http://www.nanaimoinformation.com/fo...?t=2929&page=4
and the old malaspina hotel and post office - http://bp1.blogger.com/_ON3V_iGCKwg/...+of+slide7.jpg |
hey dylan, what's going on in Parksville/Qualicum? I haven't heard much if anything from there in a while.
|
Thanks for the pics and links Dylan.
I was in Nanaimo when I took those shots and I never even noticed the Palladian because I guess I was so dazzled by Pacifica's towering mediocrity! While the economic conditions obviously aren't great to build another tower, at least cape development isn't building the palladian which means if it does get built, it will probably happen in our lifetime. |

Nice shot Dylan. :)
You know it's a special thread when the webmaster has time to take and contribute photo's and links to it. :P For the project up in Parksville, as of mid-July, still under construction, and I forgot to take any pics the one time I was down there (down being down from Courtenay). Wasn't much acivity on the site either, though I couldn't tell if the people onsite were construction workers or kids fucking with the equipment. However, there has been a noticiable amount of progress in the 24 months it's been since I last went through the area... Can't believe it's so slow. o.O |
yeah, nice shot, it really shows how tall pacifica is, because it's a lot taller from the water side than the street. I thought for sure someone was going to ask me how I figured that pacifica is 22 stories since my pic only shows it being 18 from the street side.
Where did you take the pic Dylan? |
I was on the Newcastle island ferry

^For some reason that project, like the Pacifica in Nanaimo took forever. I'm not sure why but if you want a construction project built quickly north of Victoria, good luck.
|
There have been redevelopments plans for the Island Hall property in Parksville since the early 1990s I believe, but the project which came to fruition, the Beach Club, did not take unreasonably long to construct. Sure it wasn't all built at once, but it did move from one building to the next without any delays.
|
That's weird because it seemed like about a year between visits to Parksville and in that time they still hadn't finished the tallest building.
|
a quick shot of Parksville. the two new towers can be seen. a building is being moved here. I used to live in and operate SkyscraperPage out of the house on the right.

^how wonderfully ironic!
|
those towers seem to fit really well there. hopefully parksville sees more!
|
The owners of the neighbouring motel had redevelopment plans a few years back, but incompetence scuttled those. A resort of about the size and height of the Beach Club was planned. I wouldn't be surprised if the market didn't support anything new on the beach in Parksville for another 10 years.
