The old barber shop we visited is still there. It used to be called Rudy's. I recall there were 3 barbers on duty. The owner was from Germany and always gave kids hard candy. The shop is now called Amigos.
My mom took me there once and when my haircut was done I went outside. She gave me a severe scolding for not saying ''thank you'' to the barber.

Los Feliz Elementary School
 

The original photo is of the wood framed Los Feliz School. It burned down. Then a concrete/stone school was built in its place. It was destroyed by the Long Beach earthquake. Don't recall years for the above. By the time I attended elementary school there from 1955 to 1962, it was the same building as now fronts New Hampshire. There are more buildings on the school lot than when I was there AND the school is now a magnet school. The first wooden building fronted on Prospect Avenue/Hollywood Blvd. The other two versions fronted on New Hampshire.

The 46th Academy Awards were held Tuesday (Tuesday?) April 2, 1974, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion,
a drawing of which you can see behind the Oscar on the billboard. The Sting won Best Picture that year.

Cine Mobile sign on small building.

Notice the billboard says 7:00 p.m. I remember when I grew up in New York State the Oscars would
sometimes start at 10:00 p.m.!

I was trying to find out where on Sunset Blvd. the above photo was taken.
Hollywood Photographs has this photo of Cine Mobile from 1973, saying the
location was at Sunset Blvd. and Sunset Plaza Drive.

The two tower buildings in the distant background of the color photo must be the two towers in Century City.
This area on the south side of Sunset Blvd. has been very much altered since the photo was taken, unlike the
north side where Sunset Plaza Drive connects to Sunset, which is mostly the same. I wonder what the original
intent of the Cine Mobile building was when it was built. It doesn't seem like it'd been built for this company.

Main Street Gym #1
 

Shown above is Turn Halle, aka the Turn-Verein Germania Building, at 321 S. Main. Its cornerstone was laid on October 22, 1893.
You can see it here on the 1894 Sanborn Map at 319-21-23 S. Main.


In 1926 the building became home to the Main Street Athletic Club, aka the Main Street Gym.


This photo of the gym is undated, but I'd guess it was from the mid- to late-40s and certainly no later than February 3, 1951:

and then the memorabilia-filled iron box inside the cornerstone. I wonder if they found anything unusual in the box . . .
