Yes! The decorations, layout, light and overall atmosphere are quite evocative; I can imagine what that room smelled like (tobacco, leather, wood, tobacco).

1940 Dodge Luxury Liner De Luxe [D-14] in "The Man Who Wasn't There",
nice tie. Filmed in many locations in the LA area....

Dodge Series D-14 2-door De Luxe sedan , 1940. The De Luxe models are identifiable by the stainless steel belt molding. They were still often designed as the " Luxury Liners" , a designation introduced on the 1939 cars .Six cylinder engine of 87 hp.The picture here is very clear and shows all the details of the car.

At first I thought it was two people. (now I'm pretty sure the hat is hanging from the tree)

Oh, and one more thing.....is the person sitting under the striped blanket a man or a woman?

(there's a vague Gertrude Stein resemblance)

While trying to gather more information on the South Pasadena Masons, I happened upon this photograph of the Cawston Ostrich Farm float from the 'Prosperity Parade' of 1908.

I'm guessing the photo was taken in South Pasadena somewhere near the farm. -but the actual parade took place in downtown Los Angeles.

The best clue, as far as I can tell, is the name of the winery in the background on the left. --there's a lumber yard beyond that (it appears to be on both sides of the street)

I believe the two mystery words are North Cucamonga. Maybe that's where the grapes were grown?

The G stood for Giovanni, and his brother was most likely Chas or Carlo (depending on which CD you look at), although there was also a Louis Demateis in the business who lived with the others a 628 N Main Street.

The 1899 CD lists Giovanni in the winery business at 627 N Los Angeles as Demateis & Pellissier. He was living at 24 Olivera, and business partner Antoine Pellissier was at 27 Olivera. The same CD shows that the two were also proprietors of the North Cucamonga Winery (North Cucamonga, Cal), with an LA address at 430 W 7th Street.

By 1914, the business had become the Italian-American Vineyard Co, with Giovanni as president and premises at 1507 E 1st Street. By then, Giovanni was living at 333 N Breed Street.

It looks a bit smaller than the other tunnels around town and I believe those are raised rail tracks with weeds near the tunnel portal.


This is a long shot. I wonder if it was the r.r. tunnel at the end of Ducommun St. that angles trains over to Union Station.

Anyone know what make of car this could be.? I know that a few readers are very helpful on these mystery cars and I make a lot of mistakes. What with those tail fins and all, I get all mixed up.

Trains exit Union Station in the Northbound direction.
All train tracks terminate at the end closest to the 101 Freeway.
(Except for the Metro Gold line, which crosses the 101)
