Thanks for digging out that building permit, GW. I didn't think to check there. I wonder if this Chevy truck was at A E Nugent. The description says the owner was someone named Wasserman, but the location is given as 4th Street & South La Brea Avenue, and the date as 1933. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original Both from USC Digital Library |

Does anyone have an idea where Bassett was located?
Along the SP Sunset Route mainline (and later Valley Blvd.) about halfway between El Monte and La Puente. This was the junction with the SP Covina Branch. |
:previous: Just for fun, here's the distance between downtown Los Angeles and Bassett.

The sign reads:
"SKENDERIAN AGENCY" "REAL ESTATE" "INSURANCE" According to Google, there is a VAHE SKENDERIAN selling Allstate insurance in Glendale. |

Skenderian Insurance was at 3721 W Pico-- https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...2520AM.bmp.jpgGSV In the distance is a familiar building at Norton Ave...we've seen it a number of times on NLA. From post 5995 https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2...2520AM.bmp.jpgGSV The pic below is from post 18426 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...2520AM.bmp.jpg The large rooftop sign even farther in the distance may be one of a Citizens Bank branch--there was one at Pico & Bronson... maybe Hoss can shed some light.... |
:previous:
It could well be the Citizen's National Bank. Here's a picture of the Pico-Bronson branch at 4117 West Pico from post #20783. The building is still standing, but without the roof sign. Quote:

We've seen Toff's on Hollywood Blvd. near the Chinese Theatre before,
but here's a street level color snapshot from the 1960's. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B8hM13uCQAI-cu-.jpg@LostL.A.01 Looks like a James Bond film with Sean Connery is at, or coming to, the Chinese Theatre. Appearing at the Cinegrill: Bill Darnell and Felix Martinique, maybe? It looks like Parnell, but there was a singer named Bill Darnell. And where's the film footage from that lady's camera? |

Here's another fine looking station from the 1910s. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/BHPrv0.jpg eBay This time it's located in Bloomington. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/SCKheR.jpg Bloomington station was quite a bit east of the Bassett Station. I've circled it in blue below. 1920 Pacific Electric Map http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/DxbCSb.jpg http://www.bigmapblog.com/2012/pacif...-angeles-1920/ "In 1907, the Riverside Portland Cement Company built a large plant near the Crestmore Quarries (South Bloomington) and to provide transportation to employees built a standard gauge railroad to Riverside. On May 20, 1911 the line was opened to Bloomington. The original community, known as Crestmore, was generally located between Locust Avenue and Larch Avenue, south to Jurupa Avenue, extending to the Riverside County line. The Pacific Electric Crestwood Line (Riverside-Rialto) provided local service for many years." below: The boundaries of present day unincorporated Bloomington. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...921/eWEato.jpg google_maps :previous: I just noticed the large rail-yard on it's eastern boundary. here's an aerial http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/X5JW5t.jpg google_earth Do any of you rail fans have information on this particular rail yard? __ |
I've just got a single Julius Shulman image for you today. This is a 1954 view looking north on S Spring Street from 7th Street. It's "Job 1688: Stiles Oliver Clements, view of Spring Street (Los Angeles, Calif.),1954". I really like dappled light, probably reflections, on the intersection. The Rush Drug Co is on the left. Next to that there appears to be a cocktail bar called Riley's with shamrocks on the sign, but we can't mention that on No Irish LA ;). In the background are the California Bank and Hotel Hayward.
