Cool!
That's an astonishingly clear day. I've been up there a few times and had no idea you could see the city. I think it's about 35 miles or so.

Zerton Dec 10, 2008 8:22 PM

Riding the Amtrak from Albany really shows how beautiful north of NY is. Then suddenly you're in darkness underneath the city, with all the graffiti and old pillars flying by. When you get to the Penn Station everything opens up at once. One of my favorite experiences, but maybe I'm easy to please that way.

10023 Dec 11, 2008 6:31 AM

I remember climbing that damn thing for some "team building" exercise during training for my first job in New York. Such a pain in the ass, but the view was certainly amazing once you got up there.

Trantor Dec 11, 2008 2:57 PM

wow, I didnt even know there were hills nearby NY!!!!

Seriously?

The Catskills are a little over an hour northwest, the Adirondacks are about 4-5 hours north. The Appalachian range is within easy driving distance. And there's hilly terrain as soon as you hit the suburbs to the north.

I love driving on the Taconic Parkway to Hudson NY. One of the most pleasant drives leaving NYC. You are literally surrounded by park land, forests and hills. Except that you must obey the speed limit. Cops will get you.

And it is, only this one's man-made and only took about a hudred years to build...

I have vague memories of going there as a child (to the state park), but I really need to get out to nature more.

Dr Nevergold Dec 13, 2008 4:01 AM

This is some really good stuff.. Didn't know there wasn't a larger coastal plain (or relative lack thereof) around the city. I've never been west of Newark airport... Nice!

The mountains northwest of NYC are simply stunning. I have always wanted to visit the Catskills and for sure the Adirondacks. 6 million acres of parkland up there. NYC has the best of both worlds. An amazing city with amazing nature preserves close by.

alexjon Jan 2, 2009 5:14 PM

Reminds me of the foothills here-- I wonder what it looked like before all those hills and mountains got sanded down by erosion?

Yeah, a lot of people think only of the urban side of New York. But the city contains, and is not too far from a lot of nature.

Cool pic. I think I recognize the higher mountain to the left as Mount Marcy and the one on the right (closer) as Algonquin Mountain in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks.

Exodus Jan 17, 2009 9:48 PM

Some of those remind me of the hills around L.A. and Frisco. I admit that I was ignorant about N.Y. and Jersey having hills like that. Thanks for sharing these.

tdawg Jan 21, 2009 5:08 PM

I believe this is Breakneck Ridge. I've done this hike before. You can actually take MetroNorth to the Appalachian Trail.

Isn't it Bear Mtn? I go up there every summer to escape the heat in The City!

I think for most people outside of the area, there is a surprising amount of natural resources around the city.

ESB looks especially massive from that distance.

These are my favorite kind of skyline pics, where you can just make out a city's silhouette from a distance. Do we have any threads dedicated to shots of this sort on the forum?

I love these long distance photo's too. I remember watching the US open tennis tournament a few years back and they showed some shots of Manhatten from the top of one of the show courts and it looked amazing. I don't know I guess it looked 5 miles away but in reality it's probably 20 miles away!! Just shows the shear size of Manhatten. Thanks for listing the photo's.

From that angle, it would appear closer to the Chrysler than the Empire State.

Wheelingman04 Oct 6, 2009 8:48 PM

That is one thing about NYC I always loved is the fact that you can be in the densest city yet be so close to the mountains and nature at the same time. What a great location.
