Hey, I came across an old comment in the 1WTC thread where someone (STR, I think) mentioned there were renderings of a plan from the 70's to add something like thirty floors to the ESB. I looked through the thread but couldn't find them, anyone have those renderings?

^ Really? Never heard of those plans. Only thing that got added was an antenna.

Ack! That would have ruined the building, and for what, to still be the country's tallest? Not worth it.

I don't think it was necessary. Atleast the country and even the same city was getting the WTB with the Twins, not some foreign country like Dubai. Dubai.

Ack, considering that this was the early 1970s and the architect used the word "flamboyant" to describe the new style, I shudder to imagine what the addition would have looked like.

When I was in New York last week, we stopped by the ESB, and this building looks even more imposing in person. It seems so much more solid than the glass and steel towers its size that I've seen.

Completely different from what I was thinking. I thought they would have just remove the mast and build more floors and put the mast back on. But then again, the ESB is good the way it is. The Metlife North, if people are still interested in it, could be redesigned to mimic that classic art deco look while still suppassing its iconic next door neighbor like it was suppose to do years ago. We can't just have 432 Park having the highest roof in the city.

I would also like to remind people that all of the new floors would have a 1960s glass facade (ew). :yuck:

Unfortunately I can't find it, but somewhere out there there's a hilarious New Yorker cartoon depicting the Port Authority's response to the response. Basically, it proposed building a giant connecting spire on top of the Twin Towers.
