Today's Julius Shulman post shows some stores in Pasadena. This is "Job 2553: Burke, Kober & Nicolais, Gude's and Mandel's Buildings (Pasadena, Calif.), 1958". First, Gude's Men's Women's and Children's Shoes.

My searches found a 1958 address for Gude's at 338 S Lake Avenue, and a 1960 address for Dedrick's Tux Shop at 250 S Lake Avenue. Despite this, I'm not sure that I've found the right location. That puts Mandel's nearly opposite Bullocks, but I can't match the reflections in the windows. Can anyone remember these stores or confirm where they were?

We've seen Julius Shulman pictures of Douglas Honnold designs in the past (e.g. here and here). This is "Job 1006: Douglas Honnold, Dunhill's (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1951".

The 1956 CD places Alfred Dunhill of London at 136 S Rodeo Drive. The location is confirmed by the back of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in the second picture above. The rear of the hotel still looks the same (below), but the Dunhill's building was lost in the '80s or '90s (it's difficult to tell from the historic aerial views).

The Dunhill website now lists Beverly Hills locations in Saks 5th Avenue at 9600 Wilshire and in Neiman Marcus at 9700 Wilshire.

Undated photo, but probably about 1970. This was taken from the rear parking lot for the Dart Industries bldg at Beverly/La Cienega. The bldg on the right is 8487 W. 3rd St. I worked in that bldg from '74-'80 when it housed Transamerica Title Ins. and David L. Wopler Productions. See my post on page 1654 where I identified the bldg to the east (Johnny's coffee shop/Gottfried's Deli). As I mentioned in that post the 8487 bldg was built in 1954 as a Mode O'Day warehouse. There is a fence visible here, that divided the parking lots of Dart Industries and the Transamerica/Wolper bldg.

To the right of the woman's head is the roof of a bldg with 3 dormers, that's The Record Plant recording studio. Here are those dormers in a 1978 fire:

Here's a photo from the Johnny's thread on pg 1654, taken from W. 3rd St. You can see the 8487 bldg on the left, and the Dart Industries bldg behind that. There's a transformer on a pole, a portion of that transformer is visible in the extreme upper right corner of the 1970 snapshot.

Where the woman would have been standing is now a parking structure for the Beverly Connection mall. The Johnny's bldg, still a restaurant, is visible here on the left. 8487 W. 3rd is the same 1954 bldg, it's gone from warehouse to offices and now retail.

Your invitation to the opening party was a brick!

"The Record Plant at 8456 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles California opened on December 4th, 1969 with a grand opening party
that featured a star studded cast of Hollywood's musical elite. Guests were invited with colorfully painted bricks that they presented
for admission to the party. A Mason in a tuxedo fitted the bricks into a wall of the front office. The printing on the brick advertised
"L.A.'s 1st Hunchy Punchy Recording Studios" and the dress code was "Bells and Ribbons, Satin and Spangles".

A little more Record Plant history.


One of the two founders of the Record Plant came to a rather 'noirish' end to his life.

"On July 20, 1977, Kellgren and his secretary Kristianne Gaines were found dead in the swimming pool at his residence in Hollywood. A business associate of Kellgren's was in the house at the time; he called police and reported that Kellgren had recently been in surgery, and that he had been swimming in the deep end of the pool. Gaines, 34, a resident of Los Angeles, was last seen alive sitting on a raft in the pool; she could not swim. The incident was called "a double accidental drowning" by the police. Two days later, an investigator told reporters that there was no indication of "foul play".

Kellgren was survived by his wife Marta, their two children Devon and Mark. (not sure what he was doing with the secretary)

But I did find that he was renting a 'castle' above Sunset at one point in time (he wanted to turn it into a recording studio, but city ordinances wouldn't allow it)

The Shipman Manufacturing Co was at 1326 S Lorena Street. The building is still standing, and appears to have kept some of its period details. As far as I can tell, it was built in 1937. The first listing I found for Shipman Manufacturing at this address is 1938, so despite the ship details (inset) looking like the old Bank of America logo, they were probably installed for Shipman. Listings in Billboard magazine from around 1950 suggest that Shipman Manufacturing also supplied items such as postcards, candy bars and gum,
