Aspiration (or a copy) overlooking the pool at Villa Valentino.

"Aspiration at the Villa Valentino, Tom Lyle's home in the Hollywood Hills. I believe Tom Lyle, was a major contributor, paying for the statue to be set in De Longpre Park, in 1930."

Looks like it's still there, ER:

You can just barely make out the statue from Google Street View:
https://i.imgur.com/Kf4QZX3.gif

It seems(?) that the white Aspiration is the original statue, and the bronze (now black) statue is a reproduction. The following article makes it sound like the bronze statue (or perhaps just the monument?) was created post-mortem:

The original statue seems(?) to be in storage...

This is post number 46,003 after 2300 pages and over 22 million views. Absolutely amazing thread guys. I only learned about this thread yesterday when I saw the view count and did a double take. I have since gone through many pages and not even scratched the surface.

By the way, is there really a restaurant next door to Rudy's old place just called "crabs"?

For example, the house shown below is the same house as the one above (6776 Whitley Terrace) -it's still hard to believe.

Of the two houses, Falcon Lair is far and away the most famous. (in the public's imagination anyway)

I had a metal piece of the Falcon Lair fence that I abscombed in the 1980s. (that is...until my sister decided to clean out our family garage in Illinois :hell:

it was one of these curvy things (red arrow below)

The fence was all rusty and the piece practically fell off in my hands.

Can anyone figure out where on La Brea this short gif was filmed?

La Brea Ave, Los angeles 1960'S

update:

I just found the complete .59 sec. video.

Video Link

___________________________________________________________________

Pretty easy to figure out because there are only two places where La Brea turns sharply at an intersection like it does in the beginning of the video - Wilshire Blvd and Sunset Blvd.

The video starts at the corner of Sunset and La Brea, heading north up La Brea past Lanewood Ave, Hawthorne Ave, Hollywood Blvd, and finally, Yucca St.

In the entire clip, I could find only three(!) buildings that are still standing.

Thanks, Scott Charles. I'd like to point out/add that in the first frames of the video, in the background you can see the CBS "eye" and a sign for Perry Mason. The buildings there are the old Charlie Chaplin Studios on La Brea and is where Perry Mason was filmed.

As the car crosses Sunset Blvd. to the left we see a Standard gas station on the corner followed by a Coffee Shop. The coffee shop is the Carolina Pines. Here's a photo of that area looking north, from a different post also by BifRayRock.

At 0:29, on the left, there's a "lounge" shown that I can't make out the name of, can anyone else? In that video there are three gas stations all in close proximity!

I happened to notice, just now, when the video ended there's a link to another video that is traveling up La Brea and ends just as it gets to the Chaplin Studios. They are both labeled Part 1, but the above one should be Part 2.

Video Link

There's a lot of signage that can be read in this video, but I haven't had time to do it yet. As you can see in the youtube photo that comes up, while traveling up La Brea, at about the 30 second spot, you can see the skeleton of a gasometer, the one that I presume was located near the Goldwyn Studios on Santa Monica Blvd.! You'll see the whole thing if you watch the video.

And since it's the same year, 1965, here's another video:

Gosh darn! I had no idea. If I had known that I would have been traipsing all over that slope.

The remnants of the Villa Valentino lie just on the other side of that sound barrier/wall on Wedgewood Place.

And guess what folks. There's a DOOR! pretty much right at that spot.

Scott Charles, thanks so much for the information and finding the three buildings that are still standing. (hard to believe only three have survived)

woo hoo.

As late as the early 2000s, part of the Valentino fence still existed near the freeway wall. We picked pieces of the wood and put them in our wallets and jokingly referred to them as fragments from the "True Cross." The fence is now completely gone.

I attended one of the Valentino commemoratories in the 1960's at the Hollywood Memorial Park when singer Rudy Vallée spoke. He told how people confused him with Valentino and thought he was the actor who, "sang in silent movies."

ethereal_reality Mar 18, 2018 6:45 PM

Oh man BDiH, I wish I could have been with you on one of your excursions to the Villa Valentino site.

I've always wanted a fragment of the True Cross ;)

Comparing the sign in the video to the 1964 CD, I found Sullivans Lounge at 1626 N La Brea. The other visible signs on that block are for Gates Piano Co at 1630 N La Brea and Regina Cleaners at 1632.

Do you know what I find strange about this photograph FW?

I'm 99% sure that the man brandishing the pick axe is Thomas Lyle Williams.

Hi, Phil, I noticed that, too, and it amused me. Doesn't seem like there would be a restaurant in that particular location, does it?

Can any of you sleuths tell me whether there actually were ramshackle houses this close to the gas works in 1931, or did MGM put them up just for a couple of shots? All the period photos I've seen near the Gas Works show a distinctly industrial neighborhood.

Well, here is a 1928 aerial showing the gas tanks, with Aliso crossing the LA River at the top and 1st Street crossing
the river at the bottom. It looks like there could be houses just west of the gas tanks. Marked with a red dot on the
east side of the river is the intersection of Kearney and Anderson (today, Anderson is Mission and Kearney doesn't go
that far west):

This February 12, 1933, photo is described as "Kearney Street west of Anderson Street, east side." The homes
and their front yard fences look similar to those in the movie stills:

Maybe he thought that, if you pushed the "reverse" button on the pick, it would rebuild the place. ;)

Edit add: More seriously, sometimes when something dear to one is to be destroyed, no choice, it makes one feel better to have a hand in it one's self, even in a "ceremonial" way, and so gain a feeling of control; otherwise, one feels victimized and weak.
