I'll start with this one. (they get more interesting as I go along) note the wrought iron lamp

I find the next two photos especially intriguing becase of the ornamental 'garden', that was constructed around a small group of trees in her backyard.
I don't believe I have ever seen anything quite like it.

It's almost like a little stage.

If you ask me (and you didn't), the poor trees seem a bit confined. I wonder if something like this is detrimental to the trees? (Yoo Hoo, odinthor)

This one is my favorite. A regal spot for a photograph.

If we're able to figure out where she lived [at least in 1925], I thought it'd be fun to to snoop around the property [via google_earth] and see if this strange garden feature is still intact.

From Census and other info, it does not appear that she lived in Los Angeles in 1925. She would have been 19 at the time and appears with her parents in Kansas in 1920 and in the Kansas State Census, also with her parents in 1925. There is a passport application in 1924 which lists her residence as the Wentworth Hotel in NYC. She married an Albert Sutherland in 1926 in New York. Sometime before 1928 she had gone on trip to France and returned in 1928 when there are travel documents found. Her passport application, dated September 18, 1924, is signed and attested to by Barbara Bennett, sister of actresses Constance and Joan Bennett.

She had apparently divorced Mr. Sutherland and then at some point married a Deering Davis. All of this apparently occurred in New York. The only reference there is to her living in Los Angeles was in the 1940 Census when she is listed as working as a copy writer for a magazine ( according to articles, she did this work for a short time, before returning to New York) In that Census she was living at 1317-3 North Fairfax Ave in Beverly Hills.

This building may be still there, although that number no longer appears in the Tax Assessor records. There are U-shaped apartments located in this area which are from the right era but there are no yards to speak of. An aerial view on Google street view, shows an area at the back of one of the buildings between the garages, which has some foliage. It is that annoying "cartoon" sort of stuff, through which you can't actually see anything.

Looking at the photos, it appears that there are hills in the background, so it probably isn't at the North Fairfax address, but in someone else's backyard. Also, there do not appear to be those French doors on the buildings on Fairfax.

She died in New York in 1985.

As to what is growing, it looks like newly-planted ivy. You plant small starts of ivy about a foot apart and then wait for it to spread, which it will. In between the ivy, it looks like there may be some Ice Plant (Delosperma) which is also prone to spreading.

Yes, I concur. The main planting looks like newly planted Algerian Ivy (Hedera algeriensis). The neighborhood rats, snails, mice, and other such critters will be watching the development of this with pleasure, as they dote on thick patches of Algerian Ivy.

Sorry for my skimpy presence on NLA lately, I'm kind of busy these days, horticulturally in particular (but other stuff too): November-December are heavy gardening months for me, odd as that might seem...

Cheers!

Presumably it wouldn't have been a motel because even in 1921 there probably wasn't much parking around here. I'm thinking tourists because after all, people are generally a lot more willing to put up with such congested quarters for a night or two than for an indefinite period. It's depressing to see that these are now apparently permanent residences.

After all, motor courts were very popular in the 1920s and 30s, e.g. the "walls of Jericho" scene in It Happened One Night.

I wasn't aware, until this morning, that the Bonaventure Hotel originally had a cabaret.

Let's stick with the same time period [1976 in this cae] and travel over to the Los Angeles Hilton. (the Statler)

los angeles times archive

"Mike Grady looked at his computer and asked it if it knew any songs. After a momentary pause, the machine obliged with “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

The Logicon Corp. computer, displayed at the Los Angeles Hilton just prior to the Torrance company’s annual meeting Monday, won’t be a contender for the Top 40.
It’s tone deaf and sounds like it has a stuffed-up nose.

But it’s a hit at what it’s designed to do, which is to allow humans to enter data into the computer simply by talking to it, and to get data out of the computer by having
it talk back to them.

The system used by Logicon and many other firms involves 60 sounds called “phonems.” These 60 phonems are stored in the computer’s memory. When it needs to “speak” a word, it searches its memory for the sounds that make up the word, puts them together and “speaks.” The 60 can make virtually any word in the English language."

I looked up the CDs, and then found that the answer was in Joseph Widney's Wikipedia page:
He owned the parcel of land where the Los Angeles City Hall now stands, as well as much of Mt. Washington, Los Angeles, California, where his last home (a Victorian mansion at 3901 Marmion Way) stood.
It looks like there's apartments there now.

It's rather difficult to see what [exactly] is at the bottom of the cliff. To me, the wrecks look like they're been down there for awhile.

Maybe the policeman is taking inventory of the number of wrecks.

If we could only read what he's writing down on the tablet.

This could be natural gas from deep underground that's coming up to the surface and burning. It could also be from underground gas pipes.

This happened in the 1980s and has happened many times since 1900.
