2 '66-7 Buick intermediate wagons--same A body as the Olds variants, but different front ends and other sheet-metal differences (one is the glass-roof version, the other looks like the less-deluxe Special Deluxe version); two '64 Cadillac convertibles, maybe a dark third unless it's a '63; second from bottom is a '65 Pontiac hardtop, and, nearest, what looks like might be a '61 or '62 Caddy convertible.... And it looks like a '66 Caddy might be in the carport at left.

The Beatles met Elvis at his house at 565 Perugia Way, so you're not wrong. Just checked the view from the elevator lobby in my dorm had when I was at UCLA, looked straight at that house.

That looks like the iconic GMC SceniCruiser bus.....from the 1950s...but its a knockoff Felxible vehicle known as the Vistaliner.

We have seen a large number of photographs of the 1938 flood on NLA over the years.

This album of 23 snapshots has recently turned up on Ebay.

The seller only gives us a sampling of five. If anyone recognizes the location(s) let us know.

I think that the fertilizer plant is the large building at the center of this August 14, 1941 view, taken after the flood damage was repaired.

The building is shown on the 1921 Baist map as Agricultural Chemical Works, which I assume got shortened to the A C W Fertilizers seen in e_r's picture. I can't find that company in the CDs, but Agricultural Chemical Works was originally listed at 905 Macy. Looking at Historic Aerials, the building survived into the '70s, and had quite possibly only just been demolished in the 1980 view.

The seller included 3- or 4-up views of many of the other photos if you scroll the thumbnails. Most show damage along the river, although one includes a sign for Grand Central Air Terminal.

I can't see the truncated pyramid, but maybe this July 18, 1928 view will help someone else track it down. I've arrowed Willard's on the corner of Pico and Beverwil. Another view from September 14, 1937 shows a few more houses.

These were built circa 1930 - 33. Perhaps the picture quality plus the skewed angle of these houses to the camera is giving the odd shape in the original picture. :shrug:

The Du Barry sign can be seen in the background, so I'm going to guess that we're looking at the Shell service station at 3325 Wilshire Boulevard (listed in the 1932 CD). That's the corner of Catalina.

Dick Whittington's envelopes (also part of the photoset) give the date very clearly as 1930.

What was there: Permits for the first Shell station buildings at the nec of Wilshire & Catalina were issued on Aug 1, 1930--more than six years after the Aronson house was cut up and moved to Fremont Place.... The full story is here.

The Shell station is at the center of this aerial view which dates from about a year after the Christmas scene (this one is December 16, 1931). The corner of the Ambassador site is in the lower-left corner.

The main 1930 CD lists about 60 Van Fleet & Durkee service stations (with a couple more in the regional ones). For some reason I can't see a list in the 1931 CD, but the 1932 CD includes our station at 3325 Wilshire among around 80 Shell Service Inc stations. 129 W 2nd is the address of the Van Fleet-Durkee Inc offices (along with many other companies). In 1932, William C Van Fleet is listed as president of Shell Service Inc, with W T Durkee Jr (or possibly William P Durkee) as vice president.

Ran across the above newspaper image of a house once at 533 South Main St while looking for something else...fun to see the floor plan with it. USC has a photo on which the drawing appears to have been based. Looks to be a typical 1880s Italiante city residence. The Rowans of the real estate family owned it and rented it to the Silver Republicans*--then sold it in 1905.

In early 1910, police raided the premises looking for illegal gambling...then in 1911 Woodley's Optic Theatre replaced it. Turns out the estimable ER and HossC got a handle on the address four years ago in post 23688 AND in post 26613 the next year--with more photographic images of the house.

*Had to refresh my memory about Silver Republicans (if I ever had a memory in the first place). Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

"The Silver Republican Party was a United States political party in the 1890s. It was so named because it split from the Republican Party over the issues of free silver (effectively, expansionary monetary policy) and bimetallism. The main Republican Party supported the gold standard. Silver Republican strength was concentrated in the Western states where mining, particularly silver mining, was an important industry. Silver Republicans were elected to the Congress from several Western states. In 1896, Silver Republicans supported Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan over William McKinley. After 1900, the Silver Republican Party was on the decline and most of its members rejoined the Republican Party."

I've just read an interesting story which will hopefully influence future similar situations in places like Los Angeles.

Last year, Ross Johnston bought the Richard Neutra-designed 1936 Twin Peaks house in San Francisco for $1.7m. This year he demolished the house and then applied for a permit to build his planned new home. Unfortunately for Mr Johnston, the City Planning Commission has just ruled that he must rebuild a replica of the Neutra house and include a street-side plaque explaining what happened.

The story can be found at various sources including the San Francisco Chronicle.

The several remodels of the house transformed it into a piece of junk.

From the article..."...the historic integrity of the Neutra design had been erased over time — first in a 1968 fire and later in a series of remodels in the 1980s and 1990s. "

f.y.i John McCormack was a famous Irish tenor.

This bit of information is also quite interesting.

"McCormack bought Runyon Canyon in Hollywood in 1930 from Carman Runyon.
McCormack saw and liked the estate while there filming Song o' My Heart (1930), an early all-talking, all-singing picture.
He used his salary for this movie to purchase the estate and built a mansion he called 'San Patrizio', after Saint Patrick.
McCormack and his wife lived in the mansion until they returned to England in 1938." wiki

Hmmm....have we seen McCormack's mansion, 'San Patrizio', on NLA?

The lights may be from the Ebell of Los Angeles/Wilshire Ebell Theatre, but there's only a small neon sign for the theater there today.

The UCSB site has some 1927/28 aerial views before the buildings above were constructed, and some very detailed images from 1939. The detail view below is from one of the 1939 images. The center houses seem to match the McCormack's bungalow and its neighbor, but with the thatch replaced with a regular tiled roof.
