Bellefonte, PA

Bellefonte is a borough in central Pennsylvania, and is the seat of Centre County. Bellefonte is about 10 miles east of State College. The population is around 6,200.

Bellefonte developed in the early 1800s as an iron-producing town. It was located in an area of Pennsylvania with a wealth of iron ore, coal, limestone, and timber. When the ironworking industry declined after resources were depleted, Bellefonte was already the county seat and an influential town in Pennsylvania. Coal continued to be brought into town, and business gravitated to Bellefonte. Bellefonte was considered an important place in Pennsylvania. In 1883, Bellefonte became one of the first 10 communities to be electrified.

Eventually, the iron and coal industries faded, and Bellefonte's Victorian architecture was preserved with the town's economy slowing down.

a great new normal thread of a historic small town -- just what the doctor ordered -- thanks!

Wow I haven't been there in ages and you brought back some nice memories for me. It's a neat little place with impressive housing stock and architecture, which you captured perfectly!

Great tour! Bellefonte has lots of character and quick access to some of the best trout streams in Pennsylvania...if you are into that sort of thing.

Beautiful town. I wouldn't mind checking it out but I don't see myself making a special trip anytime soon.

Great town with great architecture. I've been here once or maybe twice - during my time in Lewisburg. I remember the Crider Exchange Building - so impressive and one of my favorites!
